CES Proving Grounds Full Review June 15th 2012

Arrived at the beautiful Twin River Casino with my good friend Joe Leonard aka The Artist.  We quickly went through the media section and found our seats.  We of course had to see Jamie Thompson and donate some money to the great cause.  I saw Doomsday walking, Tom Evans and Dan Cormier are all in attendance to root for their favorites.  Get Punched and Hub Boxing are here selling the merch.  Fightstream.com is here to record the fights and I gotta give them a shoutout because they do a great job.  Now the fights are pretty close to what we saw in the teaser that Mike Strazzere wrote for us except the Calvin Kattar vs. Chris Foster was cancelled due to medical reasons I believe by the commission. The Joe Pingitore vs. Alan Beeman is also off the show, due to last minute scratch. We still have 8 solid professional fights and will make for a great night.

Fight 1: Billy Giovanella (Pro Debut, Connors MMA) vs. Gilvan Santos (1-2, Dragon's Lair)

I am very excited to see Billy make his pro debut after seeing many of his amateur fights.  Billy  gets a takedown with a missed kick from Santos.  Billy starts off in guard and now passes to side then to half guard.  Gilvan sweeps out and stands up and Billy threatens with a guillotine and Gilvan slips out.  They stand up and Billy throws a punch and goes for a double leg takedown and gets it.  He is now working the guard and controls the rest of the round on top.  Gilvan is doing a good job at not taking any damage.

Billy Giovanella 10-9

Rd 2: Gilvan does a jumping knee and it might his shoulder but Billy gets the slamming takedown.  The crowd cheers for the nice kick.  Gilvan stays active from the bottom and bucks Billy off briefly.  He tries and upkick but Billy avoids it and starts working the side briefly and then goes back to full guard.  Gilvan threatens with a guilliotine from the bottom but Billy slides out.  Billy gets bucked off and works the back and then goes for an armbar.  Gilvan spins out and gets in some punches to the head of Billy.  They are back standing and Billy gets another takedown but first eats a few knees to the head before he gets it as the round ends.  Another good solid round for Billy.

Billy Giovanella 10-9

Rd 3: Gilvan has a good sprawl as Billy goes for a takedown and they are back standing.  Gilvan tries another jumping knee and Billy takes him down and is working the guard.  Billy is relentless with the takedowns!  Not too much action Billy does get a nice elbow in.  He eventually passes to full mount and Gilvan rolls out and Billy takes the back.  He is working the rear naked choke but eventually Gilvan spins out and is now on top.  He gets in some elbows and ground and pound and Billy sweeps out.  They stand and the round ends.

Billy Giovanella 10-9

Billy Giovanella defeats Gilvan Santos via split decision.  Wow not sure how they scored that a split decision when a guy dominated on top for two solid rounds but thankfully Billy still got the win. Very good pro debut for Billy.  He dominated on the ground and got his takedowns at will.

Fight 2: Jay Bakanowski (Pro Debut, Wai Kru) vs. Leon Davis (2-0, FAA)

Leon gets in a head kick and Jay finishes the takedown.  Leon bounces right back up and gets in a barrage of punches to the head  Leon is working the clinch and gets in some knees and eventually gets the takedown.  Jay gets right back up using the cage and Leon gets another takedown.  Leon is now working the side.  Leon jumps over and has a kind of leg triangle and gets in some shots to the head.  He threatens with a kimura but Jay defends nicely.  Jay bucks out and they are back standing.  Jay gets in some knees to the body and they break.  Jay is getting the better of the standup but Leon is working a takedown.  He gets the double leg and Jay is working his way back up.  Leon gets a slamming takedown and the round ends.

Leon Davis 10-9

Rd 2: Leon gets an inside kick and Jay gets in a jab of his own.  Leon gets a slamming takedown and is now working the side.  He takes the back and gets a body lock.  Leon is a little high up to get a rear naked.  Leon maneuvers into full mount but Jay spins out and Leon takes the back and tries to flatten him.  Jay defends real well on the bottom but Leon is like a spider and all over him. Leon has his back and now has another body lock as the round ends.

Leon Davis 10-9

Rd 3: Leon starts us off with a takedown.  Jay gets back up but Leon is all over him and gets another takedown.  Both fighters are showing fatigue.  Leon continues to work the dominant positions and now has Jay's back.  Jay ends up in guard as the round ends but its too late.

Leon Davis 10-9

Leon Davis defeats Jay Bakanowski via unanimous decision.  Leon moves up to 3-0 and is still undefeated.  Very dominant performance by Leon over a very tough Jay Bakanowski.

Fight 3: Nick Drummond (3-0, Wai Kru) vs. Sergiii Musiienko (Dragon’s Lair) 1-2

They start out standing and banging.  Nick gets in a few jabs of his own and so does Sergii.  Sergii misses with a flying right and Nick takes him down and takes the back.  He get the legs hooked and gets it under working a rear naked choke.  Sergii gets back up.  Sergii works the back briefly and Nick gets up using the cage.  They clinch near the cage and Nick is getting in some big knees to the head.  They fall to the ground and he works a rear naked choke for the tap.

Nick Drummond defeats Sergii Mussiienko via rear naked choke in Rd 1.  Nick improves to 3-0 and remains undefeated.

Fight 4: Nate Andrews (Pro Debut, Rukus Fighting Academy) vs. Pedro da Silva (1-3)

They stand briefly with not a whole lot going on.  Nate tries a jumping knee or a kick of some sort and Pedro gets the takedown.  He is working the guard.  Nate bucks him off and stands up.  Pedro gets him to the ground again and is working the guard.  Nate sweeps out and takes Pedro's back.  He has a nice body lock and is working the rear naked choke.  Pedro's slips out of this one but Nate relentlessly sticks with it and applies it again and gets the tap.

Nate Andrews defeats Pedro da Silva via rear naked choke in 3:47 rd 1.  Nate was down in the round at that point and hung in there and got the big win for his pro debut.

Fight 5: Chandler Holderness (8-3, Wai Kru) vs. Bob Burton (2-1)

Chandler comes out swinging.  He gets in two good body shots.  He backs him up twice and gets in a good elbow to the face as they clinch.  He is working the clinch and gets couple of knees to the body.  Bob reverses and works for a takedown.  He doesn't get it and Chandler gets in a big combo and finishes it off with a downwards elbow to the ear for the win.

Chandler Holderness defeats Bob Burton via ko to the head in Rd 1.  Now this could have been an illegal 12-6 elbow but it was tough to see from the angle.  It is questionable if it hit behind the ear as well but that is up to the ref and either way it is in the books.  Congrats to Chandler and Wai Kru for a great performance.

Fight 6: Andre Soukhamthath (1-1, TriForce) vs. Vinny Tisconie (0-0)

Vinny comes out swinging and Andre gets the takedown.  He is now in half guard.  He passes to side and gets in some knees to the body.  Dre gets almost a crucifix and finishes it with some ground and pound and the ref stops it.

Andre Soukhamthath defeats Vinny Tisconnie via ref stoppage to strikes in 2:06 in round 1. Dre gives a good speech and talks thanks all the important people.  He does a great job and I think he has a shot at politics after this the way he moves the crowd!!  What do you think Dre??  CES talks about EB and does a great job at making the crowd aware of the event.

Fight 7: Ryan Quinn (8-3-1, ATT) vs. Abner Lloveras (14-6, Team Link)

Ryan attempts a takedown but is stuffed.  Ryan tries for a second slamming takedown and gets it.  Abner uses the cage and gets up.  Ryan takes him right down.  Abner catches Ryan with a left hook and Ryan is stunned.  Ryan attempts another takedown but can't finish it.  They are standing and Abner is getting the better of the standup.  Ryan is bleeding from his nose and looks like under the right eye.  Ryan works for another takedown but can't get it.  Abner gets in an uppercut and Ryan gets a takedown.  Abner works his way back up and gets in an elbow.

Abner 10-9  This round was real close.  Ryan got some takedowns but wasn't able to keep Abner down.  Abner had the better standup and I gave him the edge.  It could definitely be 9-9.

Rd 2: Ryan goes for a takedown but Abner defends real well.  He works for another single leg and gets it.  Ryan works the guard and eventually Abner gets up.  Abner gets in some good jabs and some straight rights.  Ryan gets in some jabs.  It looks like Abner is bleeding from the right ear.  Ryan goes for a takedown and Abner has a good sprawl.

Ryan 10-9  Real close round.  Ryan was pushing the pace and got the big takedown and had the dominant position for 40 seconds or so in the round.

Rd 3:  Abner starts us out with some jabs.  Both fighters get hit with a good punch.  Spit flies everywhere.  I would say Abner got the better strike in.  Ryan pushes the pace but eats some big shots.  Ryan works another takedown but gets stuffed.  Abner takes his back and then backs up and lets him up.

Abner 10-9  Another real close round.  Ryan continued to push the pace but in my opinion he ate too many shots so I gave the edge to Abner.

Abner Lloveras defeats Ryan Quinn via unanimous decision 30-27. What a great fight.  Abner fought the fight he wanted and kept his distance and showed his stellar boxing skills.  He was able to fight the takedowns for the most part and forced Quinn to stand with him.  Quinn stuck with his gameplan as well and continued to fight for his takedowns and Abner just defended well.

Great national anthem done by Cynthia Sanchez.  Sign this girl up for American Idol.

Fight 8: Keith Jeffrey (7-2-1, TriForce) vs. Harley Beekman (4-1, Bombsquad)

Keith starts us with a pair of leg kicks.  They both get in a pair of kicks.  Harley gets in a good right hand.  Keith got the takedown and Harley works an armbar but Keith slips out.  They stand up and Harley is working for a takedown.  Keith gets in a leg kick.  Harley closes the gap and works for a double leg takedown but can't get it.

Very close round to call.

Rd 2:  They start out working their kicks.  Harley closes the gap and works the takedown but gets caught in a real tight guillotine.  He fights it but is forced to tap.

Keith Jeffrey defeats Harley Beekman via guillotine tap in 1:25 in Rd 2.
