NEF 37 2/1/2019 LIVE REVIEW

We are here live at New England Fights Subzero show and the name couldn't be anymore fitting.  It is a sold out event in Bangor, Maine and there are a total of 11 fights.  The refs will be Steve Rita and John English.  Pete Czymbor is the host of the night and the ring girls are Katherine and Cassandra.  The fight fans are getting loud and the action is about to begin.  NEF does the national anthem and the crowd roars.  Please follow along as I do my best to keep up with all the action.


145 AM Rob Kiah 1-0 (Young’s MMA) vs Joe Howard 1-1 (CMBJJ)

Joe gets in the first strike.  He gets the takedown and they bounce back up.  Joe gets another takedown and Rob sweeps.   Rob is now on top in guard.  He gets some space and gets in a hammerfist.  He passes to full mount and postures up.  Joe bucks him off and he takes the back briefly and slides off.   Joe gets the takedown and Rob sweeps again to gain top position.  He moves to full mount and gets in a punch as the round ends.

Kiah 10-9

Rd 2:  Rob gets the takedown by hip toss and has the side.  He is getting in some strikes and Joe gives up his back.  Rob sinks the arm under and is trying to get the tap.  He gets it for the win.

135 AM Jordan Young 1-2 (Young’s MMA) vs Clifford Redman 0-7 (Independent)

Clifford gets the takedown and they scramble.  Jordan scoops him up and slams Clifford to the mat.  Jordan gets his arms free and gets in some punches.  He moves to full mount and gets the back.  He works the rear naked choke for the tap.

135 AM Nate Boucher 3-3 (CMBJJ) vs Dillon Henry 0-0 (First Class MMA)

They lock horns and they roll.  Nate has the side and takes his back.  He sinks the rear naked choke for the tap.

125 AM Glory Watson 2-0 (Young’s MMA) vs Rachael Lippert 4-2 (Fearless MMA)

Glory starts us off with two inside leg kicks.  Glory ducks under a punch and tries to get Rachael to the mat.  They are down to one knee but she can't finish the takedown.  Glory is pressing Rachael up against the cage.  They exchange some knees.  Rachael pushes Glory over to the opposite ends of the cage.  Glory reverses and has one leg trying to get her to the mat as the round ends.

Watson 10-9

Rd 2:  They are both working their strikes.  Glory is getting the better of the striking so far.  Rachael ducks under a punch and gets the takedown.  Glory grabs hold of an arm and is trying to turn it into a submission but runs out of time.

Rd 3:  They are working their strikes again.  Rachael gets a good combo and backs Glory up against the mat.  Rachael is trying for a takedown and Glory gets a nice guillotine for the tap.

265 AM Roger Ewer 1-0 (Young’s MMA) vs Bryce Bamford 2-0 (First Class MMA)

They are swinging away.  Bryce is going to the body and then head.  Bryce swing with an overhand right and gets the knockout for the win.

130 AM Brady Macdonald 1-1 (Pictou County Jiu-Jitsu) vs Jake Bagley 0-0 (Nostos)

They collide and Jake gets him to the mat.  Brady has the back of the standing Jake.  Jake is doing a good job at controlling the wrists.  He falls off and Jake makes  him pay with some strikes.  Brady is trying for a kneebar.  They are now standing and swinging away.  Jake is getting the better of the exchange.

Bagley 10-9

Rd 2:  They are swinging away.  It is at a slower pace so far as both fighters are getting tired.  Jake is pressing him up against the cage.  They break and then clinch again.  Jake is getting in more combos and winning the round.

Rd 3:  Once again, they are swinging away.  Jake gets the takedown.  Brady is trying for an armbar but can't get it.  He grabs the heel and tries for finish but can't get it as Jake spins around.

Jake Bagley defeats Brady Macdonald via unanimous decision.  What a war!!








145 AM Catie Denning 1-1 (Young’s MMA) vs Amanda Bennett 0-0 (First Class MMA)

They are both swinging.  Amanda has Catie pressed up against the cage.  Catie is getting the better of the striking.  They break and Amanda has Catie up against the cage.

Denning 10-9

Rd 2:  Amanda is pressing Catie up against the cage.  Catie grabs the single leg but can't get it.  Catie gets in a combo and the crowd roars.  Amanda connects with a combo.  The ten second bell sounds and Catie turns it on and wins the round in my eyes.

Rd 3:  Catie lunges forward and gets in a combo.  Amanda has her up against the cage briefly.  Both fighters are showing fatigue now.  Amanda gets in a combo and Catie dives down for a takedown.  She has the leg but runs out of time.

155 AM Taylor Bartlett 1-1-1 (CMBJJ) vs Devin Corson 1-1 (The Outlet)

Devin works the takedown and moves to full mount.  Taylor gives up his back and Devin is trying for a rear naked choke.  He can't get it and they are back standing.  Devin connects with three big punches as the round ends.

Corson 10-9

Rd 2:  Devin connects with a combo that backs up Taylor.  Devin is hitting hard.  He gets in a front kick and then follows it up with a clean combo.  Devin gets in another combo and they fall to the mat.  Devin takes the back and is trying for a rear naked choke but can't get the finish.

Rd 3:  Devin connects with a right and grabs the back.  He suplexes him to the mat and has the back.  He is high and not able to get the finish.  He jumps off and gets in a couple of punches to the head.  Devin gets the takedown and is in guard as the round ends.

145 AM TITLE Fred Lear 6-2 (Young’s MMA) vs Zac Richard 3-0 (Nostos)

Fred grabs hold of the leg but can't get it.  They are back to the center.  Not sure what happened but ref has deducted a point from Lear.  It was for grabbing the fence and stopping a takedown. Fred gets in some knees to the body from the clinch before the round ends.

Rd 2:  Zac dives for a takedown and Fred has the neck.  Fred gets in a perfectly timed knee to the breadbasket.  Fred tries for a double leg takedown and Zac gets in up the sprawl position.  He gets Fred to the mat.  They get to their feet and Zac has his arms around the waist of Fred as the round ends.

Rd 3:  They clinch up against the cage and sprawl.  Zac tries for a takedown and Fred sprawls.  The NEF crowd is so loud in here for this fight.  Fred has the back of a curled Zac as the round ends.

Rd 4:  Fred gets the takedown but can't keep him down.  Zac gets in some good strikes.  He looks for the takedown and Fred stuffs it.  Zac throws Fred on his back and slams him to the mat.

Rd 5:  Fred has the back and they awkwardly fall to the mat.  They are back up and Fred gets the takedown.  He is in full mount briefly and gets pushed off.  Fred has the arm but can't rip it free.  Zac has the back of Fred and Fred slips out.  This fight is insane!  They are back standing and Fred gets in a good punch as the round ends.

This fight was so fast and close that I am glad I am not a judge on this one.  Let's see how it pans out.

The fight is ruled a draw.








180 PRO CJ Ewer 3-2 (Young’s MMA) vs Mark Gardner 0-0 (The Academy)

Mark goes high with a kick that glances.  CJ goes for the takedown but can't get it.  Pockees ties him up and CJ spins out.  CJ is cut above the eyebrow and its bleeding good.  CJ gets out and has the side.

Mark Gardner defeats CJ Ewer via doctor stoppage due to cut over left eye.








145 PRO TITLE Josh Harvey 5-0-1 (Young’s MMA) vs Bill Jones 13-11 (Nostos)

Josh gets in a couple of leg kicks and goes for a takedown.  Josh gets the takedown and has the back.  He can't get the hooks in and falls off.  Josh gets in a submission and gets the verbal tap.

Josh Harvey defeats Bill Jones via verbal submission to armlock at 2:19 in Rd 1.

April 27th will be the next NEF show and they have just announced that Rasquatch will be fighting on the card.  They do not have an opponent for him yet.  The show will be taking place in Portland at Club Aura.  Get your tickets early as the last bunch of shows have been selling out and this one is sure to as well.  The fights were awesome and if the rest of NEF's shows continue at this pace, the rest of the year is going to be awesome!
