NEF XIV 9/6/2014 REVIEW

We arrived at the event with plenty of time to spare.  We quickly found our spots and got power the antique laptop I own.  Warchild had to get his photo with the two beautiful ring girls as I promised him for making the long trip.  There are 25 fights total for the evening and they should go one after another.  Pete Cymbor is the announcer for the night.  The awesome Origin BJJ tent is up selling all their merchandise.  They got some nice stuff so make sure you check them out online if you weren't able to attend the event.  Tim Sylvia was in the house doing a meet and greet.  Brett Raio kicked the night off with an awesome version of the National Anthem.  Follow along with us below..



137 AM  Carl Langston 3-4 (BGMMA) vs Nick Spencer 4-4 (Choi’s)

Carl starts us off with a leg kick.  Carl rushes in and is looking for the takedown.  Nick reverses and is looking for the single leg.  Carl defends it and one of the knees from Carl slips low to the cup.  Nick takes a minute and the fight resumes.  Carl misses with a high kick.  Nick gets in an inside leg kick.  Nick just misses with a high head kick.  Nick rushes in for a single leg kick as the round ends.

Real close round, I give slight edge to Carl 10-9

Rd 2:  Nick starts us off with a solid inside leg kick.  Nick is warming up and is getting in much more leg kicks at the start of this round.  Carl connects with a spinning back kick to the body.  Nick counters back with combo punches.  Nick goes for a takedown and Carl pushes him down and takes the side.  Nick is doing a good job of tying him up and not taking any damage.  He uses the cage and works his way up as the round ends.

Rd 3:  Nick starts out the round aggressive.  He is pushing the pace and getting his inside leg kicks.  Nick goes for a takedown and goes to full mount.  He is getting in some punches to the body and trying to get the finish.  Carl spins and Nick takes his back.  The ref stops the fight.

135 AM Trevor Hebert 1-4 (First Class) vs Michael Crespo 1-0 (MMA Athletix)

Trevor goes in for a takedown but Michael defends it nicely.  They are now in the center and Mike gets in an outside leg kick.  Crespo with another kick to the body.  Trevor rushes in and Mike makes him pay with a couple knees to the body.  Round ends with a nice round for Crespo.

Rd 2:  Trevor rushes in and misses with a combo.  Trevor connects the next time with a power right hand.  Crespo gets in a leg kick.  Mike connects with a front kick to the head.  Trevor takes it and seems unfazed.  Mike catches a leg kick and counters with a jab.  Mike gets in a punch to the body.  Crespo gets in a kick to the jaw as the round ends.

Rd 3:  Crespo gets in a pair of leg kicks.  Trevor rushes in and unloads a flurry of punches. Crespo gets in a knee to the head and is warned by the ref after Trevor reminds him.  Crespo gets in some more solid leg kicks.  Trevor gets in a combo as the round ends.

Michael Crespo defeats Trevor Hebert via unanimous decision.  After the fight Michael Crespo proposed to Natalie!!

170 AM Frank Dellasalla 0-0 (Choi's) vs Pat Kelley 0-0 (Young’s)

Pat bull rushes in and is looking for the takedown.  He gets Frank down and is cautiously waiting to pounce.  Frank keeps his distance and gets up but gets knocked back down.  Pat is trying to get in some hammerfists.  Pat has the back and is looking to flatten him out.  He works it and gets the tap.

Pat Kelley defeats Frank Dellasalla by tko stoppage to rear naked choke at 2:12 in Rd 1.  Pat Kelley is 50 years young and got the W.  Awesome!!

190 AM Jacob Cameron 0-3 (Nitemare) vs John Gardner 0-2 (First Class)

Jacob starts us off with a leg kick.  John unloads a combo that connects and Jacob counters with a good uppercut.  Jacob connects with another solid shot that drops John.  Ref rushes in and stops the fight.

145 AM Jeremy Tyler 4-2 (Team Irish) vs Matt Denning 3-3 (CMBJJ)

Jeremy connects with a short right and they clinch.  Matt is working a takedown and he gets it.  He has the side and Jeremy gets the reverse.  Jeremy is cranking on Matt's neck but is forced to let go.  Matt is trying for a triangle but Jeremy slams his way out.  Matt is working his way up and Jeremy slams him back down.  Jeremy gets in two shots to the body.  Matt tries for a guillotine and gets the roll.  He ends the round on top.  Wow what a round.

Denning 10-9, more active from the bottom and got the takedown in the beginning.

Rd 2:  Tyler gets in a body kick.  Denning gets the takedown and takes the back.  He gets the tap for the W.

Matt Denning defeats Jeremy Tyler by rear naked choke at 1:04 in Rd 2.  Big W for Denning!!

135 AM Hillary Cooledge 0-0 (Independent) vs Tara Mitchell 1-0 (Littlefield’s)

Tara unloads a flurry of punches.  Hillary ties her up and holds her to stop the punches.  They fall to the ground and Tara is in the guard.  Tara takes the back and is trying for a rear naked choke.  She runs out of time.

Rd 2:  Tara is getting in some solid shots.  Hillary charges and Tara brushes her off into the cage and they go to the ground.  Tara jumps in and decides after 20 seconds to back off and keep the fight standing.  Tara continues to work her jabs until the round ends.

Rd 3:  They clinch up at the cage and Hillary goes down trying for a guillotine.  It doesn't look too deep and Tara keeps peppering her side with strikes.  The rest of the round continues like this.

155 AM Josh Harvey 1-0 (Young's MMA) vs Alex Johnson 0-0 (Ruthless)

Alex misses with a kick and Harvey gets the slam.  He moves to full mount and takes the back.  Harvey gets some shots to the head looking for the finish.  Alex works his way up and Harvey connects with a high kick.  Alex counters with a kick of his own and they go down together.  Harvey works the rear naked choke for the tap.

Josh Harvey defeats Alex Johnson by ref stoppage to rear naked choke at 1:45 in Rd 1.

145 AM Dom Cofone 4-4 (BGMMA) vs Corey Hinkley 2-2 (CMBJJ)

They clinch and Dom gets the quick hip toss.  Dom has the side and Corey is trying to get back to his feet.  Dom is trying to posture up and get in some ground and pound.  Not much action and the ref stands him up.  Dom gets another quick takedown as the round ends.

Rd 2:  Dom gets the double leg takedown and is now working the side.  Dom moves to full mount but is pushed off quickly.  He is laying heavy and takes the back.  He sinks in the rear naked choke for the tap.

175 AM Nash Roy 2-0 (Young’s) vs Caleb Farrington 0-0 (Team NEU)

Nash gets in an outside leg kick.  Caleb is looking for the takedown but can't get it.  Nash connects with a power right that stumbles Caleb.  Caleb is still hanging on and gets back to his feet.  Nash gets in a big combo that connects clean.  Caleb takes him down and takes the back.  He is looking for the rear naked choke but can't get it.  Nash spins and is now in the guard.  Caleb bucks him off and they are back to their feet.  They are both swinging for the fences and connecting.  The crowd is roars!!  What a fight!!

Real close round, I give Nash 10-9

Rd 2:  Caleb dives for a takedown but is stuffed.  Caleb is trying to get the finish with strikes.  He takes the back and is working a rear naked choke.  He is trying to rip the arm free for an armbar.  Nash is out and is trying to get to his feet.  Caleb is now in the north south position.  He then moves to the side and moves to full mount.  He works the americana for the tap.

135 AM Nate Boucher 0-0 (CMBJJ) vs James Dougherty 0-1 (Choi’s)

James starts us off with a leg kick.  Nate dives for a takedown and gets it.  Nate picks up James and slams him down.  James is working his way up using the cage and he does.  James is threatening with a guillotine but it doesn't look too serious.  The rest of the round is with Nate in a guillotine hold.

Rd 2:  Both fighters are being cautious.  Nate gets the takedown and is now in half guard.  James is keeping him tied up pretty good so he isn't taking any damage the rest of the round.

Rd 3:  James is working his jabs.  Nate gets the takedown and is now working the side and then gets pushed into the guard.  James gets some separation and works his way up.  Nate takes him down again and is now working the guard.  Nate postures up and gets in some ground and pound as the round ends.

265 AM Gravin Guillen 0-0 (Independent) vs Bill Leahy 0-1 (Young’s)

Bill gets the takedown and tries to move to full mount.  He works a quick arm triangle for the tap.

135 AM Steve Desjardins 3-3 (Team Irish) vs Erik Nelson 1-1 (CMBJJ)

Erik misses with a right hand and goes to the ground.  Steve takes the half guard and gets in a hammerfist.  Erik gets back to his feet.  He gets in a quick jab.  They clinch up against the cage and then break.  Steve gets the takedown and is in half guard until the round ends.

Rd 2:  Erik throws a high kick that is checked.  Erik is clinching Steve up against the cage.  He gets in a knee to the body.  Erik throws the jab.  Erik gets in a cup shot.  Steve takes a few minutes and the fight is on.  Erik misses with a high kick and falls to the ground as the round end.

Rd 3:  Erik gets in a jab.  They are going at it for this round.  Erik is pushing the pace and controlling the octagon.

Steve Desjardins defeats Erik Nelson via split decision.

145 AM Caleb Hall 3-1 (Choi’s) vs Phil Exner 0-1 (Littlefield’s)

Exner gets in the jab and goes for a takedown.  He is stuffed and picked up and slammed.  Caleb is posturing up and trying to get in some hammerfists.  Phil threatens with an armbar but can't quite get it.  Caleb is working a rear naked choke but runs out of time.

Rd 2:  Caleb gets the takedown and is working the side.  He moves to full mount and is taking the back.  He gets the tap.

145 AM Johnny Crafts 1-0 (NEU) vs Justin Witham 0-0 (Nitemare)

Johnny starts us out with a jab.  Johnny gets the takedown and takes the back.  He gets the rear naked choke for the tap.

155 AM Jarrod Tyler 2-1 (Team Irish) vs Mike Robinson 1-3 (MMA Athletix)

Mike is throwing some high kicks that are real close.  Mike clinches Jarrod up against the cage for a bit.  Mike gets the takedown and is now on top in full mount.  Mike is working a nasty armbar but Jarrod holds on and makes it to the next round.

Rd 2:  Mike tries for a takedown but is stuffed.  Jarrod gets in a combo and Mike smiles.  Mike gets the takedown and is working the side.  Mike gets in a knee to the body. Ref stands them up while Mike is working the side with just 5 seconds left in the round.

Rd 3:  They clinch and Mike gets the slamming takedown.  Ref stands them up in side control once again.  Jarrod gets in a combo that stuns Mike.  He turns to the side and Jarrod knocks him out with one clean right.

Jarrod Tyler defeats Mike Robinson via ko punch at 1:41 in Rd 3.  People will be talking about that controversial finish.  You will all have to wait for the video to see if you think the fight deserved to be stood up.

200 AM Crowsneck Boutin 5-6 (Choi’s) vs Ramon Saintvil 2-1 (CMBJJ)

They are swinging away right away!  Crowsneck gets the takedown and moves to full mount.  He is going for the finish with hammerfists.  Ramon works his way up and Crowsneck is all over him and knocks him flat with one clean punch.

Crowsneck Boutin defeats Ramon Sainvil via ko punch at 1:01 in Rd 1.  If you are keeping track at home that is two knockouts for Crowsneck in a row!

185 AM Buck Pineau 7-3 (Team Irish) vs Mike Vangelist 2-0 (The Academy)

Buck throws a high kick that connects.  Buck gets in a knee to the body.  Mike looks for the takedown but can't get it.  Mike gets in an outside leg kick.  Mike gets in an uppercut.  Buck gets in some more leg kicks as the round ends.

Buck 10-9

Rd 2:  Buck connects with a front kick to the head and Mike takes it.  Mike goes for a takedown and Buck goes partially down but is back to his feet.  Mike dives for a takedown.  He hangs onto the leg but once again Buck stuffs it and keeps his balance.  Buck clinches him up against the cage and then backs off after about 30 seconds.

Rd 3:  Mike gets in a right hand.  Mike backs Buck up in a corner and and Buck runs out but seems to slip to the ground.  Mike gets the quick armbar for the tap.

Mike Vangelist defeats Buck Pineau via tapout to armbar at 1:54 in Rd 3.  Come from behind victory by the up and comer Mike Vangelist!!

155 PRO Ricky Sylvester 1-0 (ACC) vs Tollison Lewis 0-1 (BGMMA)

Tollison eats a leg kick and takes down Ricky.  Ricky works his way up and Tolison tries for a guillotine.  He can't get it and then tries for an armbar.  Tollison works his way up and Ricky takes him down.  They work they way up to their feet and our standing in the center.  Ricky gets in a high kick and Tollison takes him down.  He moves to full mount and is getting in some hammerfists.  Ricky gives up his back and works his way up to his feet.  He pushes Tollison back to the mat and is now in half guard.  Ricky tries for a kneebar but can't get it.  In the scramble Ricky takes the arm and cranks it.  Once again the ref stops the fight and he isn't too quick to let go.  Tollison gives him a staredown.

135 PRO Brandon Bushaw 0-0 (Serra BJJ) vs Elias Leland 0-0 (AMMA)

They are going at it!!  Bushaw stumbles Elias with a right hand.  They clinch and Elias gets the takedown.  Elias is all over Bushaw.  Bushaw works his way back to his feet and then takes Elias down.  They get back to their feet and Elias gets a single leg.  Elias gets another takedown and Bushaw gets a nice roll.  Elias gets the top position again and gets in a few hammerfists.

Rd 2:  Brandon gets the quick takedown.  Brandon has the back and is looking for the rear naked choke.  Elias sees the opening and rolls.  He is now on top in guard.  Elias postures up and gets in a shot to the head.  Brandon is trying to get up and Elias slams him down.  Elias has the back.  Bushaw gets hit in the back of the head and John English stops it and gives Bushaw time.  He takes 30 seconds and fight resumes.  Elias gets the takedown but is in a guillotine as the round ends.

Rd 3:  They are swinging away.  Bushaw connects with a front kick.  Elias is unfazed and takes him down once again.  Elias works a rear naked choke and Bushaw goes out.

145 PRO John Raio 2-5 (First Class/Choi) vs Derek Shorey 0-0 (Independent)

John rushes in with a flurry and goes for a takedown.  Shorey is working for a guillotine but can't get it.  Raio is keeping the pressure to Shorey.  Shorey gets some space and bucks Raio off.  Raio goes for a takedown and Shorey works a tight guillotine and gets the tap.

Derek Shorey defeats John Raio via tapout to guillotine at 3:41 at Rd 1.  That was John Raio's last fight and he is retiring.  Not the way he wanted to go out but it is in the books folks.

165 PRO Ryan Sanders 6-5 (Young’s) vs Ryan Quinn 10-4-1 (ATT)

Quinn gets the takedown and is keeping Ryan pinned.  Quinn is getting in some hammerfists and staying active.  Sanders gets some space and works his way up.  He gets in a knee to the head.  Quinn is working a guillotine and Sanders is out.  Quinn is working his way up and Sanders takes him down.  Sanders gets in a clean knee to the head.  Sanders is threatening with another guillotine.  Quinn is out and pushes Sanders to the mat.  He moves to full mount as the round ends.

Real close round, I give slight edge to Sanders 10-9

Rd 2:  Sanders kicks Quinn in the head.  He is clinching Quinn and Quinn gets the hip toss.  Quinn is on top in guard.  Sanders is trying to get to his feet and Quinn rolls him.  Quinn is controlling the round on top not giving Sanders any space.  Right as 10 second sounds Sanders gets up and gets in a knee to the body as the round ends.

Rd 3:  Sanders throws a high kick that is partially blocked.  Quinn goes for takedown and Sanders stuffs it.  Sanders is clinching Quinn up against the cage.  Quinn dives for another takedown but again is stuffed.  Sanders goes to one knee and Quinn puts him on his back.  Quinn is working the guard and blood is flowing from Quinn.  Kevin the ref stops the fight to have the doctor check the cut.  Fight resumes.  Quinn continues to control Sanders on the ground.  Ryan scrambles and they are to their feet.  Quinn takes him down and the round ends.

145 PRO Jon Lemke 3-2 (Team Irish) vs Amos Collins 4-3 (Serra BJJ)

Lemke starts us off with a leg kick.  Amos catches Jon with a right that drops him.  He jumps into half guard and is trying for the finish.  Amos is laying down some heavy elbows and Jon is bleeding good.  Jon pushes him off and they are back to their feet.  Amos gets in an uppercut that connects.  Jon gets in a good right hand of his own.  Jon backed Amos up in a corner and is trying for the finish.  Jon gets in a knee to the body and then a hammerfist and knocks Amos down.  John English has seen enough and stops the fight.

Jon Lemke defeats Amos Collins via ref stoppage to strikes at 3:54 in Rd 1.  What a bloody war!!

155 PRO *TITLE Bruce Boyington 6-7 (Young’s) vs Jesse Erickson 3-2 (CMBJJ)

Erickson eats a punch and clinches Boyington.  He pulls guard and Boyington ends up in guard.  Jesse is working a triangle but he can't quite lock it.  Boyington makes him pay with punches to the face.  Erickson works an armbar but he is too high up on the arm.  Boyington gets out and backs off and lets Erickson up.  Boyington gets a power right hand that sends Jesse's mouthpiece flying.  Jesse is trying to dust the cobwebs off.  Jesse dives for a takedown and gets caught in a guillotine.  Jesse gets out and takes the back.  He is working for a rear naked choke with a tight body lock.  Boyington holds it off and slams Jesse down as the round ends.

Rd 2:  Boyington gets in an outside leg kick.  Boyington gets in a jab.  Boyington is teeing off.  Jesse eats many unanswered shots and Kevin has seen enough.  Jesse was still standing I feel it was an early stoppage.  Sorry Kevin.  It was a pro fight and it was a title fight.  Let them finish the fight.

Bruce Boyington defeats Jesse Erickson by ref stoppage to strikes at 2:15 in Rd 2.  Bruce gets the belt.

135 PRO *TITLE Paul Gorman 10-8 (AMMA) vs Tim Goodwin 8-4 (Columbia)

They are both swinging.  Tim gets the takedown and gets in a nice elbow.  Tim takes him down again and is now in the guard.  Tim is around the head at full mount and Paul gets the roll.  They are back to their feet.  Tim is clinching Paul up against the cage.  Tim catches Paul's  high kick and takes him down.  Tim is now in half guard as the round ends.

Rd 2:  Tim connects with a good knee.  He clinches him and then they break.  Tim gets the takedown and is working the side.  Tim controls the rest of the round on top.

Rd 3:  Paul gets in a good leg kick.  Tim gets in a combo and a solid knee.  Tim gets the takedown and is now working the guard.  Not much action and the ref stands them up.  Paul goes for a takedown but can't get it.

Rd 4:  Paul gets in a jab.  They go the ground and Paul takes his back.  Tim gets the roll and is now working the side.  He moves to half guard.  Paul is trying for the high guard.  Tim gets in two hammerfists.  Paul gets the sweep at the end of the round but is still tied up.

Rd 5:  Paul knows he needs to finish.  Paul gets a few jabs and then Tim takes him down.  Paul gets in an elbow from the bottom.  Tim moves to half guard.  Not much action and the ref stands them up.  Tim gets hurt with a punch and Paul pounces.  He is trying to get the finish but can't get it and it is too late.

Tim Goodwin defeats Paul Gorman by unanimous decision.  Tim becomes the new champ!

145 PRO *TITLE Ray Wood 4-0 (Young’s) vs Gabriel Baino 6-1 (Link)

Baino starts us off with a leg kick.  Baino gets in a knee from the clinch.  Ray got in a good outside leg kick.  Ray gets in a jab and a high kick that connects.  Baino is pushing Ray up against the cage.  Ray circles out and is working the jab.  A solid knee to the face by Ray.  Baino gets in a straight right.  Baino rushes in and is trying for a single leg takedown.  He doesn't get it and they are back to the center.  Ray misses with a kick and then connects with a spinning kick.  Baino goes down to one knee.  Baino is eating some clean jabs now.  Ray gets a takedown as the round ends.

Rd 2:  Start of the round is all Ray Wood.  Ray connected with a spinning kick and some jabs.  He rushes in with a jumping knee that connects as well.  Gabriel is pushing Ray up against the cage.  Ray circles out and then gets in a solid knee to the head that rocks Gabriel.  Ray gets in one hammerfist and the ref stops the fight.

Ray Wood defeats Gabriel Baino via tko stoppage to strikes at 3:14 in Rd 1.  Wow what a fight!!  I have never seen Ray with such good striking before.

NEF returns to the Colissee November 15th with NEF XV and Boxing is in October as well which will be their first boxing event.  It was a great night of fights, about 6.5 hours worth to be exact.  Thanks to NEF for allowing us to cover the event for you all.
