BANGOR'S RICKY DEXTER MAKES CAGE DEBUT AT NEF XV

[NEF Press Release]

Lewiston, Maine (October 30, 2014) – New England Fights (NEF), America's number-one regional fight promotion, presents its fifteenth mixed martial arts (MMA) event, "NEF XV," on November 15, 2014 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine.  On the amateur side of the card, a 180-pound catchweight bout will be featured between Ricky Dexter (0-0) and Jacob Cameron (1-3), both from Bangor, Maine.  The bout will be Dexter's first in the NEF MMA cage.

Dexter, like many of Maine's fighters and fans, credits Maine MMA legend, and Team Irish founder, Marcus "The Irish Hand Grenade" Davis (22-10) with sparking his initial interest in the sport.  Hearing that a fellow Bangor native was on the second season of the Ultimate Fighting Championship's (UFC) The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) television series, Dexter watched the program and instantly became hooked on MMA.

"It wasn't until years later I finally gave the sport a shot," recalled Dexter.  "Being recently separated from the military, of what was the roughest four years of my life, I decided to move back home to Bangor and join up with Team Irish in April 2012. Not knowing any technique, and worried about my ego being hurt, I started out just doing Marcus's fitness classes to see how I could hang with the fighters.  I immediately fell in love with Marcus's brutal workout sessions."

For six months, Dexter did not miss a single fitness session at the gym.  One day before class, Davis, impressed with Dexter's performance in the workouts, approached Dexter and asked him to start running the fitness class.  He jumped at the opportunity.  Recently, the Team Irish fitness program was renamed "207 Athletes."

"I'm quite proud of what we have done with it," Dexter continued.  "We gained a lot of members that love to train with us.  Seeing someone walk through those doors that's overweight from poor living habits, and seeing them work their ass off through our workouts day in and day out, and make a total transformation and feel good about themselves again, there is no better feeling knowing you helped them along the way."

Not long after taking over the fitness program, Dexter also began training with the MMA fighters at the gym.  His time with Team Irish has been a life changing experience for Dexter.

"I decided to give the MMA side of it a shot, and have been training with the guys ever since," stated Dexter.  "The more I learn the more I get addicted to the sport. Training has become my life now.  I've dropped everything that has slowed me down in my past and only make choices that will make me a better athlete, fighter and coach.  I decided after two years of training and getting beat up by the toughest guys I know, and learning from the best coach around, Marcus Davis, now is the time to get in the cage and explode and showcase the gains I've made."
