NEF Fight Night VI 2/2/2013 Review



Warchild and I arrived after our 3.5 hour trip to the Colisee in Lewiston Maine.  They have 16 fights on the card tonight with 5 professional and one female amateur bout.  One of the fights was scrapped  due to a fighter not showing up.  It was the Josh Mellen and Ryan Cowette fight.  The crowd is filling up and the fights are about to begin.  I will have to get the vendor list later.  The Mainely naughty girls are the ring girls for the evening and they are looking lovely.  John Vena is our host and the refs are Kevin the ref and Jimmy Bickford.  Packed crowd, I would say 2000+ are in attendance.  I see SuckerPunch Athletics, Occupy the Cage and Old School FightWear booths are here.


135 Nick Spencer 2-2 (Choi’s) vs Jay Perrin 1-1 (Team Triumph)

They both comes out swinging.  Jay catches a kick and gets the takedown.  Nick is fighting to get back to his feet and he does. Jay takes the back but Nick slips out through the back and they are back to their feet.  Nick picks Jay up and slams him down.  The crowd roars.  Jay gets back to his feet and gets in some knees to the body from the clinch.  Jay ends up getting the takedown as the round ends.

Jay 10-9

Rd 2:  They come out swinging and Jay closes the gap and gets the quick takedown.  Nick is getting back to his feet but gets caught in the cup.  He takes three minutes and the fight resumes.  They are swinging again and Nick get caught with a thigh to the head, could have been a knee hard to tell in fast motion.  Jay is fighting for a takedown up against the cage.  Jay gets it and Nick gets right back to his feet.  They strike and Nick tackles him as they roll as the round ends.

Rd 3:  Nick goes for a takedown and Jay gets a guillotine. It doesn't look tight and Nick picks him and slams him down.  Nick is threatening with an Americana.  He cranks on it good but somehow Jay gets out and gets back to his feet. Nick is bleeding from his nose.  Jay is fighting for a takedown as the round ends.

Jay Perrin defeats Nick Spencer via unanimous decision 29-28.






205 Jason Gilbert 0-0 (Balanced Ground MMA) vs Brandon Gibbs 0-0 (CMBJJ)

Brandon is working the takedown and slams him down.  He is trying to take the back but Jason sweeps and passes to full mount.  He is trying to lay down ground and pound but to no avail.  Brandon sweeps and is not on top in full mount.  He gets in some ground and pound as the round ends.

Rd 2:  Brandon gets a takedown and goes to full mount.  He is laying down some heavy ground and pound and gets the stoppage.

Brandon Gibbs defeats Jason Gilbert via tko stoppage to strikes at 1:35 in rd 2.






135 Steve Sobel 1-1 (Young’s MMA) vs James Dougherty 0-0 (Choi’s)

They clinch and Steve reverses.  Steve is getting in some knees from the clinch to the body.  James reverses and Steve reverses right back.  James gets the reverse and Steve reverses it again.  Steve gets in a good punch as the round ends.

Rd 2:  They clinch again and Steve is working the clinch.  They break and Steve gets the double leg takedown.  Steve takes his back and hooks the legs.  He is trying to get a rear naked choke but nothing too threatening.  James gets out and they are back to their feet.  James fights for a takedown but runs out of time.

Rd 3:  They start out swinging.  They clinch and Steve is pressing him up against the cage.  They fall to the ground and James looks like he is trying for an arm bar but Steve defends well.  Steve stands up and takes the side.  Not much action so the ref stands them up.  Steve fights for a takedown as the round ends.

Steve Sobel defeats James Dougherty via unanimous decision.







135 Brandon Bushaw 4-2 (Fitness Edge MMA) vs Cody Sargent 1-1 (Balanced Ground MMA)

Both fighters are feeling each other out.  Cody gets hit with a shot and Brandon goes for a single leg.  He gets it and Cody bucks him off and they are back to their feet.  Brandon gets him down again and is working an arm triangle.  Cody turns into it and loosens the choke as the round ends.

Rd 2:  Cody hits with a high kick that is mostly checked.  Brandon gets the takedown and is working the side.  He transitions to half guard then to full mount.  Brandon takes the back and is trying for a rear naked choke.  He moves over to a kimura but can't get it.  He postures up and is trying to lay down some ground and pound.

Rd 3:  Brandon gets in a good right hand.  Cody pushes and connects with a good shot.  Brandon is working  an arm triangle and Cody is defending for the rest of the round.

125 John Parker 0-1 (Team Nitemare) vs Conner Murphy 0-0 (CMBJJ)

Conner rushes in and gets the quick takedown.  Conner is controlling the fight on the ground.  He takes full mount and lays down some bombs and gets the tap to strikes.

Conner Murphy defeats John Parker from tapout to strikes at 1:52 in Rd 1.







165 Tollison Lewis 2-3 (Balanced Ground MMA) vs John Healey 3-3 (Team Iron Jaw)

John is pushing the pace.  He gets a single leg and is now working the guard.  He is trying to posture up and get in some strikes but Tollison is defending well from the bottom.

Rd 2:  John gets the takedown and Tollison reversed it.  They scramble and get back to their feet.  John gets another takedown and is working the guard.  John postures up and gets in some hammerfists as the round ends.

Rd 3:  John closes the gap and gets the takedown.  He is in half guard and trying to pass to full mount.  He postures up and gets in some hammerfists.  John is controlling the fight on the ground very nicely and wins the round.

John Healey defeats Tollison Lewis via unanimous decision.  Nice way to bounce back John!!







195 Crowsneck Boutin 1-2 (Independent) vs Ben Raven 0-1 (Sipayik Boxing Club)

Ben gets in a few knees.  Crow catches a kick and counters with a right hand.  He gets the takedown and passes to full mount.  They get to their feet and Ben gets caught with a kick to the cup.  He takes a minute and the fight resumes.  Crow gets hit with a shot and falls to the ground but gets right back up and goes for a takedown.  He gets it and passes to full mount and lays down the hammerfists.

Crowsneck Boutin defeats Ben Raven via tko stoppage to strikes at 2:33 in Rd 1!  Great fight by Crowsneck.







150 Steven Bang 0-1 (CMBJJ) vs Drew Waltz (Youngs MMA)

They come out swinging and Bang gets the takedown.  He is in half guard but Drew gets out and they scramble.  Drew threatens with a reverse triangle but Bang pulls his head out.  They are back to their feet.  Steve slams him down and is now in guard.

Rd 2: They clinch and are exchanging knees to the body.  Drew fights for the takedown and gets him to the ground.  Bang is on his knees and is now in the north south.  Drew flips him over and is now on the side.  Drew takes his back and is trying to hook in the legs.  Drew is fighting for a rear naked choke but runs out of time.

Rd 3: They come out swinging.  Bang goes for a takedown and Bang finishes it and is now in the guard.  Bang moves to the side and then takes the back trying to get a good position.  Drew gets some room and throws up a triangle but can't sink the legs in tight.  Bang is now working the side and getting in some shots to the head.

Steven Bang defeats Drew Waltz via unanimous decision.  Bang looked much improved in this fight!








115 Erin Cooney 0-0 (SSSF) vs Angela Theriault 0-0 (Oxford Hills Karate)

Erin clinches and gets a double leg takedown.  She passes to full mount and is laying down ground and pound and gets the ref stoppage.

Erin Cooney defeats Angela Theriault via tko stoppage to strikes at 1:45 in Rd 1. Erin looked great in her ammy debut!!







145 Vovka Clay 3-2 (Team Triumph) vs Damon Owens 3-4 (Young’s)

Vovka takes the leg and gets the single leg takedown.  Vovka is working the side firing shots to the body.  Vovka gets to full mount and gets in a few hammerfists.  He gets bucked off and they are back to their feet.  Vovka sinks in a deep darce and gets the tap.  The ring card girl walks around with Round 2!! haha

155 Jesse Erickson 3-2 (CMBJJ) vs Aubrey Rion 3-2 (Fitness Edge MMA)

They clinch and Aubrey gets the takedown.  Jesse gets right back to his feet and is defending another takedown.  They go down and Jesse is on top trying to get in some shots.  Aubrey gets back up and Jesse gets the takedown and is now in the guard.  Jesse postures up but still isn't able to get in any clean shots.  Jesse takes the back and hooks the legs.  He lays some big ground and pound and gets the ref stoppage.

Jesse Erickson defeats Aubrey Rion via tko stoppage to strikes at 2:45 in Rd 1.  Great fight by Jesse!!

170 Josh Bellows 1-1 (Littlefield’s Hardcore Gym) vs Mike Sullivan 0-0 (Team Triumph)

They comes out kicking for the fences!!  Josh is trying for a takedown but Mike defends well.  Josh gets the takedown and Mike sinks in a triangle.  He fires some elbows from the bottom and opens Josh up.  Blood is flowing and he is forced to tap to the triangle.

Mike Sullivan defeats Josh Bellows via tapout to triangle at 1:11 in rd 1.  Great pro debut from Mike Sullivan!!







150 Josh Parker 3-5 (Independent) vs Amos Collins 1-2 (Fitness Edge MMA)

They are keeping it standing.  Josh gets in a good leg kick.  Amos gets the takedown but is being threatened by a guillotine.  He pulls his head out is working the side.  Josh sweeps and is now on top in the guard.  Parker is controlling the fight in guard.  He gets some space and is now in half guard as the round ends.  Amos is bleeding from a cut on the bridge of the nose.

Rd 2: Amos gets in a leg kick. Josh throws in a uppercut that connects.  Josh is working for a takedown but Amos sprawls.  They get back to their feet and Amos gets the takedown but gets caught in a deep guillotine. Amos is forced to tap.

Josh Parker defeats Amos Collins via tapout to guillotine at 1:20 in Rd 2!!  What a battle!!

150 John Raio 0-1 (Cugno Boxing Club) vs Antony Woodman 2-6 (Havoc)

Not much striking going on.  John is working for a takedown.  He doesn't quite finish it but he gets in some good shots to the head.  Antony gets back to his feet and is now pushing Raio up against the cage.  They bang it out as the round ends.

Rd 2:  John eats a kick to the head but gets the takedown.  John is getting in some ground and and pound.  Antony uses the cage and gets back to his feet.  Antony takes him down and is on top and getting in some shots of his own.  They get back to their feet and Raio takes him down.  Antony threatens with an arm bar but John slips his arm through.  John gets a guillotine but Antony slips his head out.  Antony is now on top getting in some hammerfists.  He gets the stoppage.

185 Ryan Hodge 4-6 (F2 Arena) vs Luc Bondole 1-0 (Team Fink)

Ryan takes him down and is working the side.  Luc uses the cage and stands back up.  Luc reverses and gets a takedown of his own.  Luc is no win half guard.  Ryan defends well and gets back to his feet.  Ryan gets hit in the cup.  They resume and Ryan returns the favor and hits him in the cup.  The fight resumes and Luc gets another takedown.  Ryan is on the bottom trying to rip the arm out.  Luc gets out and lays down some ground and pound as the round ends.

Rd 2: They clinch and Luc gets the takedown via a trip.  He is now working the guard.  Luc is working hte half guard.  Not much action goes on for a while.  Both fighters appear to be pretty exhausted.  Ryan is trying to get an armbar but can't pull the arm through.

Rd 3: They clinch and Luc gets the takedown again.  Not much action and the ref stands them up.  Ryan gets the takedown even with Luc holding onto the cage.  Luc ends up in half guard.  The crowd is booing.  Luc gets fired and finally puts in some meat in his punches.  They get back to their feet and Luc gets in a good kick to the head.  They exchange as the round ends.

Luc Bondole defeats Ryan Hodge via unanimous decision.






205 Jesse Peterson 7-2 (CMBJJ/SSSF) vs Greg Rebello 14-5 (SYT) [LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE]

Jesse gets the takedown but Greg is trying to get to his feet.  Jesse sinks in a guillotine but Rebello fights it.  Rebello is now on top in the guard.  Greg is getting in some ground and pound. Jesse is powering through it and is to his feet as the round ends.

Rd 2:  They come out swinging.  Greg hits him with a big knee to the chest and followed it up with a combo. Jesse goes down and Greg finishes him off with a barrage of hammerfists.

Greg Rebello defeats Jesse Peterson in 48 seconds via ref stoppage to strikes in Rd 2!!  Greg Rebello becomes the 205lb champion!!









Awards:

Fight of the Night:
Steven Bang vs. Drew Waltz.  Great back and forth battle.
Submission of the Night: Josh Parker guillotine came out of the blue over Amos Collins.  Great job.
KO/TKO of the Night:  Gotta give it to Greg Rebello with the tko stoppage to strikes over Jesse Peterson.  Great fight!
Blunder of the Night:   Hands down it goes to the ring girls!!  First fight I believe they walked in with round 4 card.  Then later when a fighter was choked out from a darce they walk in with Round 2 card!  Don't get me wrong I am sure the fighter definitely wanted another round haha!!

Overall it was an excellent night of fights.  The crowd seemed to enjoy the fights as much as we did at the press table.  The refs were very good and all of the fights were exciting except one in particular.  The crowd made sure to let the fighters know that.  I want to thank NEF and the Colisee crew for doing an excellent job with the event and allowing us to cover the show for you all.  All of our photos will be uploaded to our facebook fanpage so make sure you like it to keep up with all the news.  Anyone who is interested in their fight photos that are on facebook just go to our photos page for instructions on how to order your photos for just $20 bux with all of your fight photos onto a dvd.  The money helps cover our expenses for going to shows so we greatly appreciate it!  Team Triumph from NH dominated and won all three of their fighters matches.  Well done John Fain and all of Team Triumph!
