CES Far Beyond Driven 8/3/2012 Review

[Disclaimer] This review is by Cody Lightfoot, we are not responsible for anything said/not said in this review ;)

First, let's start off with I have no idea what the WesternMassMMA.com guys were thinking allowing me to write the review for them. Luckily for them my girlfriend Katie is doing most of the work and has an IQ and spelling abilities higher than your local townie who sits on the park bench talking to himself. We all have them and I am my home towns local weirdo. The CES show is packed as usual with an awesome line up of fights. It was awesome getting a press pass and not having to attempt to sneak in and get caught....again. I got to chat and awkwardly slap the butt’s of some of my favorite local celebrities including Tyler King, Mark Vogel, Matt “The Paper Boy” Tullos (He is 18, right? So, it isn’t weird), Steve Skrzat, Old School, Fran Collins and the GQ model/ soon to be father Greg Rebello. Also, ran into Greg’s very cool father who allowed me to take a photo of a picture he had of Greg from highschool. Notice the similarities to Hurley from the show Lost. That is for kicking me in the head, Greg!!! On to the fights!!!!

Fight 1- Joe Reverdes Vs. Anthony Carmenetti

Joe comes out to a roaring crowd and is walking out to Marvin Gaye - Let’s Get it On, he is officially cool in my book.

Rd 1- The two are feeling each other out and Joe throws a 1,2 that miss. Joe throws another 1,2 that land and followed it up with a jump knee that misses. The two are in a scramble and Anthony lands a hard right hook that drops Joe and Anthony ends up in full mount dropping some good GnP.  Joe gets the sweep and ends the round on top.

Rd 2- The two slap gloves and circle. Joe throws a cross but misses. Anthony throws a 1,2,3 that misses, as well. Joe returns with a combo and connects with Anthony’s eye. Anthony tags Joe with two hooks. Anthony tries a takedown but fails then catches a kick from Joe then gets the take down. Joe is back up and throws a hook that hits Anthony in the shoulder but caused him to lose his balance. Joe threw a knee at Anthony while his knee was down. The fight was stopped, I am guessing to see if it landed to Anthony’s face. No point awarded so I am guessing no. Joe is throwing leg kicks at Anthony and is looking busier. Anthony ends the round throwing a nice 1,2,3 at Joe in the clinch. I over hear “ If Daddy doesn’t win this I am going to have to kill somebody.” I chuckled.

Rd 3-Joe throws leg kicks that stumble Anthony and follows up with a big right. Anthony looks tired but is throwing wild and heavy looking for a KO. Joe throws a superman and a leg kick. Anthony backs off and checks out the damage to his legs. The two are going back and fourth throwing superman punches and leg kicks but Joe is getting the better connection.

Winner- Joe Reverdes UD

Fight 2- Dave Maggiore Vs. Hector Sanchez

Rd 1- Ummmm the fights over ha ha. Hector gets a KO in 8 seconds from a punch. His celebration lasted 10x longer than the fight....As it should!!!!

Fight 3- Theo Desjardin Vs. Billy Giovanella

Billy is one of my brother Chad’s training partners at Connor’s MMA and is the nicest dude ever and he has those Zack Morris eyes you can just get lost in.....So my girlfriend tells me.... On another note, Billy has the walkout music taste of a 13 year old girl.

Rd 1- Billy pushes Theo into the cage and gets a head and arm takedown. Billy is passing Theo's guard fairly easily but Theo is going for an arm. Theo is on top briefly and Billy gets on top. Billy finishing the round grinding Theo out.

Rd 2- Billy gets another head and arm take down. Theo gets Billy’s back breifly and Billy sweeps and is on top in full mount throwing some GnP and gets the finish.

Winner- Billy “I Need A New Walkout Song” Gionvanella by TKO

Fight 4- Joe Pingitore Vs. Ahsan Abdulla

Side note here Kevin the Refs hair looks amazing as usual.

Rd 1- Both guys throwing leg kicks and Ahsan lands a stiff jab. Joe is mixing it up with kicks and punches but Ahsan’s hands are landing cleaner. Ahsan lands a knee to Joe’s face but Joe throws a good head kick.

Rd 2- Both start throwing bombs Joe lands a good hook then Ahsan follows up with a good right cross. Joe’s nose is bleeding. The two are exchanging blows and is turning out to be an awesome fight.

Rd 3- Both come out of the gates swinging. Joe lands a good straight and now both men are bleeding. Joe is throwing some good body shots. Ahsan connects with a strong right and stumbles Joe. The round ends with both men just throwing toe to toe. Awesome finish.

Winner- Joe Pingitore Split Decision. (Not that it means anything but, I thought Ahsan had that fight.)

Fight 5- Dinis Paiva Vs. Gilvan Santos

Rd 1- Gilvan starts out by throwing some crazy/funky/cool kicks that I could never do. Dinis gets the takedown but Gilvan is back up shortly after. Dinis throws a body shot and gets Gilvan down. Gilvan goes for an armbar and Dinis lets him up. Dinis gets another takedown and finishes the round kneeing Gilvan in the body.

Rd 2- Gilvan “Jackie Chan-ing” it up with more kicks and Dinis gets a takedown. Gilvan throwing some up kicks but Dinis follows them in and gets a choke on Gilvan causing him to tap.

Winner- Dinis “I Want Your Haircut” Paiva. Choke at 2.14

Fight 6- Chris Cole Vs. Robbie Leroux

Rd 1- Robbie throws a lot of kicks and Chris is slow to engage. The two trade slowly for most of the round but Robbie staying a little busier. Kevin’s hair is still flawless and I take notice of how the light perfectly bounces off of it and almost gives him this Jesus like aura about him. That man in any circumstance gives it kind of a classical touch. That man could sell a ketchup popsicle to a woman in white gloves.... If you get the movie reference you can add +2 to your cool points.

Rd 2- Chris throws a couple good punches and Robbie lands a nice teep kick that dropped Chris. Robbie goes for the guillotine and Chris is out of it. Both men are trading blows but Robbie is throwing really effective leg kicks. Chris throws a flurry of punches and Robbie following in with good body kicks. The fight pace is picking up.

Rd 3- Both come out swinging. Robbie is being a lot more effective with his punching. Robbie knocks out Chris’s mouthpiece and like a gentlemen lets him put it back in. For his nice-ness Chris kicks him in the ding-dong (Lesson !!). The fight is heating up and the two men are exchanging Robbie landing some great shots to the bell. Great 3rd round.

Winner- Robbie Leroux UD

Fight 7- Ruben Rey VS. Sergio Moran Cabrera

Fran Collins told me this will be FOTN!!!

Rd 1- These guys look almost alike and both are mean mugging one another...Weird no glove tap? I didn’t see that one coming... LIEESSSS!! Ruben goes after Sergio throwing wild. Sergio tags Ruben and gives him the “Bring it mofo” wave. Ruben throws a flying knee and lands, Sergio follows up with a body shot and Ruben pulls a Jay-Z and brushes the dirt off his shoulder. The two are exchanging pretty equally. Sergio gets the takedown and Ruben throws and up kick and Sergio protests he was down. The fight wasn’t stopped and Ruben got up.

Rd 2-Sergio throws a kick and Ruben thought it was in the nuts. So Ruben stopped the fight himself, the ref then stopped it. Ha ha. Sergio gets a little slam and takes Ruben down, Ruben reversed it now has Sergio’s back. Now, Sergio reversed it and has Rubens back.........and tappy, tap.

Winner- Sergio Moran Cabrera. RNC Rd2. This kid is the real deal. Big win for only his second Pro fight.

Fight 8- Tyson Chartier Vs. Tim O’Connell

Rd 1- Both guys are throwing only 1 to 2 punches in there exchanges but they are both throwing some serious heat. Tyson lands a nice over hand right and pushes Tim in the cage. Tim fights off the takedown the two guys smile at each other. Tyson throws a heavy over hand left that finds its target and Tim goes down hard.

Winner- Tyson Chartier by TKO Rd 1

Fight 9- Mike Campbell Vs. Don Carlo-Clauss

Rd 1- Both guys know how dangerous one another is and both are cautious starting out. I wouldn’t want either guy to joke hit me for fear of death. Mike is throwing more traditional down the middle while Don is a little wilder with his punches. Don gets the takedown and Mike attempts to get up he never successfully got up before the round ends.

Rd 2- Both come out throwing bombs. Mike lands a heavy body kick, Don rebuttals with a body kick. Mike lands a clean/heavy jab and the two scramble in the clench. Don lands a punch that pushes Mike in the cage but he bounces off it to attack. Both guys are exchanging punches and both are defending them perfectly. Mike is tagging Don a little more than Don. Mike found his rhythm and seemed to pull that round out but man it was still close.

Rd 3- Body kick by Don but Mike landed a clean jab and Don is bleeding a little. Don goes for a take down and has Mike down but has no hooks in and can’t keep him down. Mike lands some hard jabs and Don’s face. Don goes for the take down but can’t get it. The round ends with the two clinching in the cage.

Winner- Mike Campbell via UD. That fight could have been anybody’s game. These are the type of fighters guys like me should strive to be like. However, I am lazy and love video games too much.

Fight 10- Scott Rehm Vs. John Howard

This is the kind of fight that if you are not Doomsday’s immediate family. You should be ashamed of yourself for not rooting for Scott. Don’t get me wrong Doomsday is a great guy and a great fighter but whenever I watch the Rocky movies I am not rooting for Ivan Drago or Clubber Lang. I am rooting for Rocky and Scott Rehm is my Rocky in this fight. A guy behind me talking about Doomsday said “ The guy looks like an action figure.” As he did.

Rd 1- The men walk show respect to one another. Doomsday is throwing good and heavy leg kicks. Scott didn’t seem to like them too much....Understandably. Honestly, I was so into watching this Cinderella story in front of me I didn’t write anything else down. From my head what I remember next was Scott. landing a nice shot that seemed to have Doomsday hurt in the cage and in danger then Scott grabbing his arm in agonizing pain then Doomsday taking him down and Scott verbally submitting due to an injury in his arm.

Winner...... of our hearts Scott Rehm. Winner of the fight John “Doomsday” Howard by Verbal Submission.

Scott Rehm has retired from fighting since the fight and seriously he is one of the most inspirational people I have ever talked to. The guy gave me one of the best pep talks I have ever had before one of my bigger fights not that long ago and just in one convo he made me change how I viewed myself for a lifetime. I am glad I got to write a few nice words about the guy on his last fight....Although, I hope it isn’t his last one.

Fighter Quotes -

Greg Rebello- “Holy S&^T, I can’t believe Tyson threw a punch!!!”

Tyler King- “ Cody Lightfoot is the definition of skinny/fat. At least he is not as much of a pansy as his brother (Chad Lightfoot, Tyler’s training partner)”

Steve Skrzat- “Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and #$%$ the prom queen.”

Well this is my first write up. If you didn’t like it you can blame it on the extra chromosome I have floating around in my body. Thanks Katie for doing all the real work...
