📰 NEWS--📰 SANDERS: “I’M A BAD DUDE. I JUST FEEL LIKE I HAVEN’T GOTTEN MY OPPORTUNITY YET”

[NEF PRESS RELEASE]

 Bangor, Maine (October 20, 2023)

After 36 years of life and 31 professional fights, THE Ryan Sanders has developed the wisdom to revel in the roar every time he gets the chance to walk through the door of the New England Fights (NEF) mixed martial arts cage in his neighborhood of Bangor, Maine.

Sanders (21-10) will headline a list of what is expected to be no fewer than five combatants out of VisionQuest Muay Thai in nearby Newport when he scraps with Sage Philippe (4-5) in a professional welterweight bout at “NEF 55: Glory Days” on Saturday, November 11.

“Extremely excited. It’s always a blessing to be able to fight in my hometown,” Sanders told host Ryan Jarrell in a recent episode of Between Rounds Radio. “And not only that, but we’re rolling in deep. We’ve got a crap ton of guys on there, so it’s just gonna be quite the night for us.It’s palpable. You can feel the energy even before the fights start. It’s amazing. It’s so cool to fight in my hometown.”

📰 NEWS--📰SANDERS AND PHILIPPE SIGN FOR CO-MAIN EVENT AT NEF 55

[NEF PRESS RELEASE]

Bangor, Maine (September 28, 2023) – New England Fights presents its next mixed-martial-arts event “NEF 55: Glory Days” on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.  Earlier today, NEF announced the co-main event of the card.  “The” Ryan Sanders (21-10) will meet Sage Philippe (4-4) at the welterweight limit of 170 pounds.

📰 NEWS--📰SANDERS ON NEF 53 FIGHT WITH ZEBIAN: “THE FACT THAT HE IS LEGITIMATE MAKES ME WANT TO BEAT HIS ASS”

[NEF PRESS RELEASE]

Portland, Maine (June 28, 2023)

A primary motivational mantra in the life and career of “The” Ryan Sanders, one recently added to his sprawling canvas of skin art, is “evolve or die.”

It’s advice he took to heart seven years ago in his professional mixed martial arts career and parlayed into 10 wins in 11 fights, punctuated with five consecutive wins by stoppage.

Sanders now finds himself at a similar crossroads after a November decision loss to a smothering wrestler, Jonathan Piersma, an outcome Sanders ascribes more to what he didn’t accomplish than anything his opponent did.

“That was a sucker punch. That was a real sucker punch to the gut. Not that he actually hit me in the gut or hit me at all,” Sanders said in a recent interview with Ryan Jarrell on the “Between Rounds Radio” podcast. “But his wrestling, he had a great game plan, man. He took me to my weakness. I thought my wrestling had gotten better.”

📰 NEWS--📰SANDERS AND ZEBIAN TO SQUARE OFF IN HUGE NEF 53 CO-MAIN EVENT

[NEF PRESS RELEASE]

Portland, Maine (June 14, 2023) – New England Fights returns to Merrill Auditorium in Portland with its next mixed-martial-arts (MMA) event, “NEF 53: American Valor,” on Saturday, July 8, 2023.  Earlier today, the fight promotion announced the addition of a professional welterweight bout to the card.  “The” Ryan Sanders (20-10) will face Ali “V.I.P.” Zebian (9-3) at a fight weight of 170 pounds.

Ryan Sanders has had one of the most storied careers in NEF history.  From main eventing “NEF 1” in February 2012 to challenging for the welterweight title three times to winning the promotion’s professional lightweight belt, Sanders has had a second home in the NEF cage over the years.  He is an impressive 10-2 in his last twelve MMA fights with eight finishes during that run.  Sanders will look to bounce back from a loss last November at “NEF 50.”  He currently represents VisionQuest Muay Thai based in Pittsfield, Maine.

“I’ve been trying to get a fight since last November, but no one wanted to scrap,” noted Sanders. “Luckily, Ali stepped up so I can get back to what I do best and that’s snatching souls. My coach, Primo, and all the killers at VQMT will have me ready for war come July 8th. Let’s get it!”

Ali Zebian will step into the NEF cage for the first time ever on July 8.  A native of Westfield, Massachusetts, Zebian has made a name for himself not only on the regional New England MMA circuit but also at the national level.  He has competed for top promotions Bellator, Legacy Fighting Alliance (LFA), and Professional Fighters League (PFL).  The fight with Sanders will be another step up in weight for Zebian who has competed recently at lightweight and previously at featherweight and bantamweight.  He represents Underground MMA Fight Club based in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

"Freedom is in victory,” said Zebian when reached for comment.

“NEF 53: American Valor” takes place on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, Maine.  Doors are scheduled to open at 6 pm with first fight taking place at 7 pm.  Tickets to “NEF 53” are available now at www.porttix.com.

📰 NEWS--📰 SANDERS ON TITLE FIGHT WITH PIERSMA: “I WANT TO SNATCH HIS SOUL”

[NEF PRESS RELEASE]

Portland, Maine (October 8, 2022)

In the process of building a docket for its golden milestone of 50 cards to punctuate a 10-year anniversary celebration, New England Fights couldn’t find a more fitting personality to put a face near the top of that poster than “The” Ryan Sanders.

Sanders is the most recurring character in that scintillating series. Despite a 3½-year layoff prior to resurrecting his career this past spring, the Bangor native is preparing for his 20th walk to the NEF mixed martial arts hexagon.

It would normally be labeled a crossroads bout: The 35-year-old veteran Sanders (20-9) against 26-year-old rising star Jonathan “War Hawk” Piersma of Waterville, New York. When those highways intersect Saturday, November 12th at Aura in Portland, Maine, however, Piersma may discover that Sanders’ motor is just now reaching full song.

📰 NEWS--📰 SANDERS AND PIERSMA WAGE WAR OF WORDS AHEAD OF NEF 50

[NEF PRESS RELEASE]

Portland, Maine (October 3, 2022)

New England Fights’ main event reveal for NEF 50 unveiled a clash of styles, a cavernous gap in age and mixed martial arts experience, and a war of words unlike anything affiliated with the promotion in recent memory.
Bangor, Maine mainstay “The” Ryan Sanders (20-9) is supremely confident, and Rochester, New York’s Jonathan “War Hawk” Piersma (4-1) slightly less jocular and loquacious but equally self-assured, heading into their scrap for the NEF welterweight title Saturday, November 12 at Aura in Portland, Maine.

Sanders highlighted a joint interview with Steve Domenico on “The Room Podcast” by serving up a steady stream of verbal volleys, characterizing Piersma as one-dimensional and inexperienced. The 35-year-old former lightweight champ scoffed at suggestions that the smaller NEF hexagon could play into the hands of a grappler such as his opponent.

“I finish fights, and I guarantee you, I’ll put money on it, he’s shooting within the first minute. I bet you he’s not gonna strike with me,” Sanders said. “It’s definitely geared toward a grappler, but it’s all about footwork and the experience and stuff like that. I’m gonna put hands on him quick, and he’s gonna panic shoot. He doesn’t want to strike. He can’t strike. His striking’s dogshit at best, and he knows it.”

📰 NEWS--📰 SANDERS & PIERSMA WILL VIE FOR WELTERWEIGHT TITLE AT NEF 50

[NEF PRESS RELEASE] Portland, Maine (September 30, 2022) – New England Fights (NEF) returns to Portland, Maine on Saturday, November 12, 2022, with its next mixed-martial-arts (MMA) event “NEF 50.” Earlier this evening on The Room Podcast with Steve Domenico, the main event was announced. “The” Ryan Sanders (20-9) will face Jonathan “War Hawk” Piersma (4-1) for the vacant NEF Professional Welterweight Championship. Ryan Sanders is no stranger to NEF gold. He is a former NEF Professional Lightweight titleholder. Sanders vacated the title to return to the welterweight division post-pandemic. The 170-pound strap has eluded him to this point in his career. Sanders has tried to capture it on two previous occasions, but came up short both times against Gil de Freitas (18-6).

🚨BREAKING--🚨 RYAN SANDERS WILL FIGHT IN BANGOR FOR FIRST TIME IN FOUR YEARS

[NEF PRESS RELEASE]

Bangor, Maine (September 7, 2022) – New England Fights (NEF) returns to Bangor, Maine on Friday, September 9, 2022, with its next mixed-martial-arts (MMA) event “NEF 49: Queen City Showdown.”  It will be NEF’s first event in Bangor in more than three years.  Earlier today, the fight promotion announced the addition of a professional catchweight bout to the card.  “The” Ryan Sanders returns to the cage to take on Stephen Stengel at a fight weight of 175 pounds.

🚨BREAKING-🚨SANDERS AND GARDNER ON COLLISION COURSE SET FOR NEF 47

[NEF Press Release]

Auburn, Maine (April 4, 2022) – New England Fights (NEF) returns with its next mixed-martial-arts (MMA) event “NEF 47: The Battle of L/A” on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at the Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn, Maine.  Earlier today, the fight promotion announced the addition of a professional welterweight fight to the card.  “The” Ryan Sanders (18-9) is scheduled to face Mark “Pockets” Gardner (2-2) at a fight weight of 170 pounds.

Ryan Sanders will make his first appearance in the NEF cage since November 2018 when he defeated Jacob Bohn (10-9) via second round doctor stoppage.  It marked Sanders’ third straight win with the promotion.  He is a longtime member of the NEF roster, having headlined the promotion’s first event in February 2012 with a submission win over Dan Keefe (7-3).  Sanders has taken part in many of the most memorable moments in NEF history, including his defeat of his former coach, and UFC veteran, Marcus Davis (23-11) at “NEF 12.”  He currently represents Vision Quest Muay Thai based in Newport, Maine.

“To say I’m excited to return to the NEF cage would be an understatement,” stated Sanders. “It’s been over three years since I last fought, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been training. I’m with a new team at Vision Quest Muay Thai and head coach in the great Primo Bellarosa. Primo has been turning me into a calculated killer for the last half year, and I can’t wait for the display of beautiful violence that I’ll be putting on on May 14. My opponent, Mark, is a tough kid, but I know I’ll give him enough reasons to make his voice chirp. I’m going to snatch his leg, neck, and soul in that order. I will smile while I do it because I love my job. The cage is my happy place, and I’ve really, really missed it. They don’t know. But soon they will. Evolve or Die.”

Mark Gardner has been a regular in the NEF cage since his amateur debut in 2017.  He went a perfect 3-0 as an amateur with the promotion, finishing all three of his opponents.  Gardner made his professional debut at “NEF 37” with a first-round victory over veteran CJ Ewer (3-3).  In his most recent outing at “NEF 45” last November, Gardner won by second-round technical knockout over a very tough Nick Alley (7-5).  He currently represents the Academy of MMA in Portland, Maine.

“I’m excited to jump back into the cage on May 14th,” said Gardner.  “Ryan Sanders is a tough opponent, and I think it'll make for a great fight. He's a seasoned fighter, but I've only improved since my last fight and I'm more prepared than ever to get in there and smash. It's gonna be a good one!”

“NEF 47: The Battle of L/A” takes place on May 14, 2022, at the Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn, Maine.  Tickets for the event are on sale now at www.NewEnglandFights.com/Tickets/.  The event will be the promotion’s first in Lewiston-Auburn since June 2019.
