CES 'Gold Rush' 8/9/2013 Teaser

CES MMA returns this Friday August 9th at the Twin River Casino in Providence Rhode Island.  They have once again a stacked 10 pro fight card.  Now a few changes have been made which I would like to point out.  First off CES has changed the layout of their website and it looks awesome.  Check it out at www.cesmma.com and also get your tickets here.  Something else has changed at Twin River Casino!  They now have table games so get there early and challenge the house at BlackJack.  Now about the fight card.  This features the first ever CES Featherweight title and fighting for it is Rob Font and Chris Foster.  That is just one of the fights!  The rest of the card is filled with top name locals from all over New England.  I have to give a shout out to the western Mass fighter on the card Damien Trites! Let me break down the card for you...Keep in mind this might not be the exact fight order.

Cheyenne Vasquez (0-0, Intenze MMA) Vs.Terrell Clark (1-0, Dragon's Lair)

Cheyenne Vasquez challenges Terrell Clark at 185lbs.  Cheyenne I believe was 2-1 in his amateur career from what I found.  He won both of his fights by strikes and he lost by ko punches to JT Harold.  He trains with Intenze MMA and will now be making his pro debut.  Terrell Clark is from Dragon's Lair and is looking to improve his now 1-0 record.  He fought for CES back in February and won by ref stoppage to strikes in Rd 1 against Adam Quitt.  Both of these fighters have great striking and I am hoping this one will be an awesome stand out battle.  We will see how this one plays out but I don't see it going to a decision.

Sophanarith "Soap" Am (1-0, Redline) Vs Devin Pilkington (0-0, New England Combat)

Soap Am takes on Devin Pilkington at 145lbs.  Soap trains out of Redline MMA and is 1-0.  His last fight for CES he fought a war against Carlos Hernandez in which he battled back and won by rear naked choke in Rd 3.  This was chosen by man and also by WesternMassMMA.com as Fight of the Night that evening.  He had a stellar amateur career with only one loss to Ray Wood.  Devin is from New England Combat and is making his pro debut.  He was 4-3 I believe in amateur according to Sherdog.com and in his last fight for AFO he won in dazzling fashion by a knockout over Jamie Courtney.  If you know Jamie, he is not easy to knock out at all.  This fight has all the ingredients to be a fight of the night material.  I feel it is going to be a ground battle but I would love to see these two stand and strike for a bit.

Charles Rosa (3-0, ATT) Vs. Silvester "Albanian Van Damme" Muritaj (0-1, Illyrian MMA)

Next up is Charles Rosa against Silvester Muritaj.  Charles is from American Top Team and has an undefeated 3-0 record.  He won one fight by tko stoppage to strikes and the other two by submissions.  They were all in the first round.  Silvester trains with Illyrian MMA and has an 0-1 record.  He fought for CES before and lost by rear naked choke early in the first round to Toby Oden.  He will be hungry for his first pro MMA win.  I gotta give the slight edge to Charles Rosa for the better record and first round finishes.  I definitely don't see this one going the distance but as we all know anything can happen in the sport of MMA!

Matt "The Mantis" Doherty (1-0, Redline) Vs. Johnny "Cupcakes" Campbell (5-4, SSSF)

Matt Doherty will be fighting Johnny Campbell at 135lbs.  This is a grudge match that was supposed to happen at the last show but injury took Campbell day of fights.  It has now been rescheduled and let's hope it lives up to the much anticipated hype.  Matt trains with Redline and is 1-0.  He won his first pro battle against ground specialist Terin Swanson by ref stoppages to strikes in Rd 2.  Campbell is from SSSF and has a 5-4 record.  Johnny fights a lot of tough fighters and this one is no exception.  Out of his five professional wins he won 3 KO/TKO, 1 Submission and 1 by decision.  For his losses he lost 2 by submission and 2 by decision.  This fight can go many ways and I expect this to be a stand up battle.  I am going to go with my gut and I feel this fight is going to come down to decision.

Dinis "Sweetbread" Paiva (3-4, Keith Allan) Vs. Rob Sullivan (1-1, Baltimore BJJ.)

Next up for CES is Dinis Paiva against Rob Sullivan at 135lbs.  Dinis trains with Keith Allan's Gym and has a 3-4 record.  He has 1 KO/TKO, 1 submission and one decision for his pro career.  He lost 2 by submission, 1 decision and one by DQ.  Dinis is an excellent ground fighter and uses it to control the fights.  His opponent Rob is from Baltimore BJJ and has a 1-1 record.  He has won a fight by decision and lost one by decision.  Even though I have family that live in Baltimore, I gotta be rooting for my man Dinis in this one!  I see this one going to a decision in Dinis's favor.

Damien "The Omen" Trites (6-5, Team Link.) Vs. Andrew "Ozzy" Osborne (6-5, Angel Gym)

Damien Trites returns to the mma cage against Andrew Osborne at 155lbs.  Damien puts his 6-5 record on the line and is now training with Team Link in Springfield MA.  He hasn't fought since 2011 but he always brings it every time.  He has 1 KO/TKO and 5 submission victories.  For his losses he lost 2 by submission and 3 by decision against many tough fighters.  Damien was first supposed to fight Ralph Johnson but Ralph had to pull out and Ozzy stepped up.  Andrew trains out of Angel's Gym and has a 6-5 record.  Ozzy has 1 KO/TKO and 5 victories by decision.  For his losses he lost 2 by KO/TKO, 1 submission and 2 by decision.  As you can see they are identical in record but I gotta go with the western Mass local Damien Trites on this one.  I think his ground game will be too good for Ozzy and I see this one ending by submission.

Juliano "Banana" Coutinho (3-1, CCFA) vs. Eric "Lucky Strikes" Bedard (5-3, Gillette's.)

Now for the heavyweight showdown between Juliano Coutinho against Eric Bedard.  Coutinho trains out of Cape Cod Fighting Alliance and has a 3-1 record.  He has one loss by ref stoppage to strikes.  He won his 3 fights by one submission and two ref stoppages to strikes.  All of his wins came in the first round.  No doubt he will be looking for the first round stoppage once again!  Eric Bedard is from Gillitte's MMA and has a 5-3 record.  Eric has 3 KO/TKO and 2 Submission victories.  He lost two by tko/ko and 1 by submission and his only losses were to Tyler King and Pat Walsh.  Now I have seen Bedard fight many times and I have not had the chance to see Banana fight yet.  On paper I gotta say Bedard looks to be better with more fights and has fought tough opponents.  However, I have heard great things about Banana and I know he is going to bring it!!  This fight is going to be a great war and it definitely is not going to the judges and I think it is anyone's fight to take.

Tom "The Tank" Egan (6-3, Team Egan) Vs. Aldo Santos (3-1, Dragon's Lair, Framingham, MA.)

Then Tom Egan challenges Aldo Santos.  Tom Egan is 6-3 and trains with Team Egan.  Tom has fought in the UFC folks in UFC 93.  He is back and I saw his last fight for Coliseum to the Cage against Lowell Zangri.  He had outstanding stand up and won with a nasty knockout by kick that had everyone stunned.  That made it his fifth KO/TKO of his pro career.  Aldo is from Dragon's Lair and comes into this fight with a 3-1 record.  He won two fights by ref stoppage and one by submission.  His only loss was by submission to John Doomsday Howard.  He hasn't fought since 2008 but Tom has only had one fight himself since 2011 I believe.  This is fight is another outstanding match up and I think it is going to be a stand up fight.  Don't blink on this one.

Chuck "Cold Steel" O'Neil (11-5, Mass BJJ) Vs. Gil de Freitas (14-5, Team Link, Ludlow, MA.)

Chuck O'Neil takes on Gil de Freitas in a 170lb battle.  Chuck is of course was on the Ultimate Fighter and comes into this fight with a 11-5 record.  He trains with Mass BJJ and is ranked #1 on NortheastMMA.net.  Gil is ranked #10 and trains with Team Link in Ludlow with a 14-5 record.  I have seen many fights by Chuck and he can win this fight wherever it may go.  Gil can also win anywhere this fight goes.  I saw his last fight up at New England Fights against Ryan Sanders where he grinded out a 5 round victory.  This fight is for all the marbles MMA fans.  This is a great fight so we can all see how Gil matches up with another tough New England fighter and I think he is going to be just fine.  This fight will be a ground battle for sure.

Featherweight title fight Rob Font (6-1, Sityodtong) Vs. Chris "Cassius" Foster (7-2, DCNU)

The main event is for the first ever CES MMA featherweight title and it is between Rob Font and Chris Foster.  Rob is from Sityodtong and has fought for CES a few times.  He now has a 6-1 record and is looking better and better each fight.  Out of his 6 wins he has 1 KO, 2 Sub and 3 decision victories.  His only loss was a decision to newly Bellator signed Dez Green.  His opponent Chris Foster has a 7-2 record and is from DCNU.  Chris has 4KO/TKO and 3 decision victories so far in his career.  For his two losses he lost via submission.  Now this fight is dead even and that is how I see it.  Chris's last fight went the full 5 round distance against Andres Jeudi so no doubt he can go the full 25 minutes if needed.  Every time I see Rob fight I think he has taken on too tough of an opponent and he proves me wrong.  He is a counter puncher and can wear you down.  I can totally see him wearing Chris down in rounds 4 or 5 and perhaps getting the submission win.  On the other hand, Foster can definitely grind out a decision as he did against Andres Jeudi and take home the belt.  This is a super tough fight for both fighters and I am excited to see how it is going to go down.

That wraps up this edition of the teaser for CES MMA.  There aren't many shows left in August for MMA so I suggest you all come out and check out this stacked card.  Tickets are available at the door and it certainly won't be a dull night of fights.  I will be there with the live play by play and Warchild will be taking photos for us.  I want to give a shout out to CES for always keeping us in the loop so we always have an accurate card.  Stay right here at WesternMassMMA.com as we get you all 'closer to the cage!'  Please share this teaser with your friends and feel free to argue with me and tell me how you think a fight is going to go down!  We love a good discussion.
