NEF 27 2/11/2017 LIVE REVIEW

We arrived fashionably late thanks to the lovely mother nature making the ground slick.  We navigated our way through the parking lot and found our way in.  The Maine fight fans didn't mind the weather as the arena is packed with fight fans.  The refs are John English and Steve Rita.  Pete Czymbor is the voice of the evening and the 2 ring girls are Katharine and Cassandra. There are a total of 18 fights on the night as Aaron Lacey's opponent's plane was grounded and he was unable to make weigh ins.  It sucks as both fighters were ready to battle but as we all know these unfortunate things happen.  Please follow along with us as we recap the night.

125 AM Angela Young (Youngs) 1-2 vs Christine Brothwell 0-2 (Bucket Brigade)

Angela Young defeats Christine Brothwell via unanimous decision 29-28

155 AM Ross Dannar 0-1 (Nostos) vs Phil Chason 0-0 (The Academy)

Ross Dannar defeats Phil Chason via unanimous decision.









145 AM Jacob Deppmeyer 0-0 (First Class) vs Frank Johanson 1-2 (CMBJJ)

Frank connects with a right.  Jacob fires right back with a barrage of punches.  Frank gets in a knee to the body.  Both fighters are exchanging knees from the clinch.  Jacob is connecting with some more heavy hands and Frank dives for a takedown.  Jacob stuffs him and gets in some more punches to the side of his head.  Frank connects with a right and Jacob slips to the mat.  Frank rushes in and connects with a right then they clinch.  Frank gets in another solid knee to the body.  Jacob has him backed up into the corner and working the body and head as the round ends.

Deppmeyer 10-9

Rd 2:  They are both swinging away.  The action slows down as Jacob has Frank pressed up against the cage.  Frank connects with a front kick.  Jacob connects with some more shots and Frank dives and gets the takedown.  He moves to full mount and drops some hammerfists and steals the round in my eyes.

Johanson 10-9

Rd 3:  They clinch and Frank rips Jake to the mat and lands in full mount.  He is high on the body and trying to get in some hammerfists.  He gets pushed back and Jacob gets the roll.  He postures up and Frank works an inverted triangle and gets the tap. Nice finish!

205 AM Zeal McGrew 1-1 (Redline) vs Pete Grinnell 0-0 (Lawton)

Zeal starts us off with a right.  Pete fires back with a counter.  Zeal with another combo that connects clean.  Zeal takes him down and is working the side.  He passes to full mount and starts getting in some ground and pound for the finish.

155 AM Devin Corson 0-0 (Shatterproof) vs Winston Cortez 0-0 (S. Tampa)

Both fighters are swinging wildly and just missing.  Devin dives for a takedown and Winston defends.  He picks him up and slams him to the mat.  Winston is right back up and he tries to slam him again but Winston lays heavy and just slams into the fence still staying on his feet.  Devin scoops Winston up and slams him to the mat.  The crowd goes nuts!  Devin is in half guard and he eventually passes to the side as the round ends.

Corson 10-9

Rd 2:  Devin starts us off with a kick to the body of Cortez.  Both fighters are working their kicks.  Devin gets the double leg and is now in half guard.  Winston is working his way up and Devin suplexes him to the mat.  Insane slam.  Winston stands up again and Devin slams him again to the mat as the round ends.

Corson 10-9

Rd 3:  Winston gets in an outside leg kick and Devin counters with a right.  Winston again with another outside leg kick.  Devin picks Winston up and slams him to the mat.  He moves to full mount and Winston bucks him off.  They are back to their feet and are both pretty tired at this point.  Winston gets in two leg kicks and Devin fires with a right as the round ends.

Corson 10-9

Devin Corson defeats Winston Cortez via unanimous decision.  Some epic slams in this fight.





135 AM Michael Crespo 3-2 (First Class) vs Fred Lear 4-2 (Young’s)

Mike connects with a right and Fred slams him to the mat.  Fred has Mike in a guillotine and rolls him on the mat but can't get the tap.  Fred is pressing Mike up against the cage.  They break to the center and exchange leg kicks.  Fred takes Mike down to the mat.  Mike is working his way up and Fred knees to the upper chest.  Fred is looking for another takedown as the round ends.

Lear 10-9

Rd 2:  Mike pulls guard and Fred takes his back.  He postures up and gets in some hammerfists for the stoppage.

Fred Lear defeats Michael Crespo via tko stoppage to strikes at 1:13 in Rd 2.






115 AM Nicole Burgess 0-1 (Berserkers) vs Sarah Ziehm 0-0 (CMBJJ)

They clinch and Nicole gets the takedown.  Sarah works her way up and they are swinging away.  Sarah has Nicole's back and pulls her down to the mat.  Nicole fights it off and gets in some hammerfists as the round ends.

Ziehm 10-9

Rd 2:  They girls are swinging away and the crowd is cheering loudly.  Sarah takes her back and Nicole turns so she is now full mount.  Nicole rolls her and but Sarah is still on top holding her arm.

Rd 3:  Nicole misses with a punch and Sarah grabs a hold of her arm.  Nicole is out and has the side.  Sarah is relentless and takes her back.  Nicole is trying to buck her off but to no avail.  Sarah works a rear naked choke for the tap.

185 AM Jon Tefft 0-0 (First Class) vs Sean Worcester 0-1 (Independent)

Both fighters exchange a punch and Jon tries for a hip toss takedown but Sean ends up getting it and is now in guard.  Jon spins and they are back to their feet.  Sean is trying for a takedown but Jon stuffs him.  He pushes Sean to the mat and is in half guard.  He fires 3 punches to the body then some heavy hands to the head.

Tefft 10-9

Rd 2:  Jon connects with a big right to start the round and Sean goes down.  He finishes him off with some ground and pound.

140 AM Henry Clark 3-2 (Choi Institute) vs Alex Clark 3-2 (Young’s)

Alex is working his kicks and one goes high.  Henry is working his jab.  Very nice striking so far in this round from both fighters.  A snapping leg kick from Alex that stumbles Henry for a second.

Rd 2:  They are both swinging hard.  Henry with a nice combo.  Alex with a solid right to the head.  Alex connects with another right.  Henry gets the takedown and is in half guard.  Alex rolls him and is now in half butterfly as round ends.

Rd 3:  Alex is throwing some heavy kicks.  Henry takes him down and Alex sweeps to full mount.  Henry bumps him off to the side.  Alex is looking for an arm triangle and it looks tight but runs out of time.

Alex Clark defeats Henry Clark via unanimous decision.






125 AM Ryan Burgess 2-1 (Berserkers) vs Justin Witham 2-4 (Shatterproof)

Justin catches a kick and connects with a right.  Justin connects with a right that Ryan felt.  Ryan is looking for the takedown but can't get it.  He gets in an outside leg kick.  Ryan drops down for a takedown but can't get it once again.  Ryan walks into another solid right.  Ryan pulls Justin down to the mat on top of him.  Ryan has his head and reverses Justin.  Justin is out and makes him pay with some hammerfists as the round ends.

Witham 10-9

Rd 2:  Ryan rushes in with an uppercut and Justin connects with a combo.  Ryan tries for a takedown but to no avail.  Justin connects with another right and Ryan fires one right back.  Ryan dives down for a takedown.  Justin grabs a hold of the neck for the tap.

135 AM Walt Shea 1-0 (First Class) vs Alan Bustamante 0-0 (South Tampa)

Walt eats two kicks and drops for a takedown.  Walt gets in a few knees to the thigh.   A low blow and the fight resumes.  Alan connects with a right that sends Walt back.  Alan connects with a right as the round ends.

Shea 10-9

Rd 2:  Alan does a jumping kick and  Fred works the takedown.  He is now in full mount and he gets in 2 hammerfists.  He gets in some more hammerfists and Alan pushes him off.  Walt is looking for the armbar as the round ends.

Rd 3:  Walt rushes in and presses Alan up against the cage.  Alan pulls guard and Walt is peppering the body.  Walt is staying busy on top until the end of the round.

205 AM *TITLE Ryan Glover 3-1 (Berserkers)(c) vs Victor Irwin 2-0 (Youngs)

Victor dives and scoops up Ryan for the takedown.  Victor takes his back and softens him up with some hammerfists.  He works the rear naked choke for the tap.

Victor Irwin defeats Ryan Glover via tapout to rear naked choke at 1:15 in Rd 1.  Irwin is now the current 205 NEF amateur champ.





135 PRO Elias Leland 2-2 (The Academy) vs Nick Santos 0-4 (Team Fury) 

Elias is pressing Nick up against the cage.  Elias takes him down and has the side.  Nick is trying to use the cage to stand up but Elias puts a stop to that.  He works the arm triangle for the tap.

145 PRO Josh Harvey 2-0 (Young’s) vs Richie Collingham 3-3 (Lakes Region)

Richie dives for a takedown and Josh stuffs him.  Josh connects with an elbow as they break.  Richie looks for another takedown and Josh is threatening with a guillotine.  Richie doesn't give up and gets the double leg.  Josh works a d'arce for the tap.

Josh Harvey defeats Richie Collingham via tapout to d'arce at 2:31 in Rd 1.







160 PRO Matt Denning 3-5 (CMBJJ) vs Ricky Dexter 0-0 (Team Irish)

Ricky is pressing Matt up against the cage.  He punches his way out and they are back to the center.  Matt falls down and tries to bade Ricky to the mat.  Ricky gets in a few outside leg kicks then lets Matt up.  Ricky has Matt up against the cage and gets in a combo.  Matt tries for a takedown but can't finish it.  Ricky misses with a punch and Matt connects with a kick to the body.  Ricky connects with a right and Matt goes low for the takedown.  Ricky pushes him to the mat and is now on top in guard.  Matt tries for a heel hook but can't get the finish.  They are back to their feet and Ricky connects with a left to the body that drops Matt.  He has had enough and waves off the fight.  Ricky gets in one more punch as the ref stops it.

Ricky Dexter defeats Matt Denning via tapout to strikes at 4:18 in Rd 1.







235 PRO Mike Hansen 5-4 (Berserkers) vs Ras Hylton 0-0 (First Class)

Mike gets the takedown and grabs hold of the leg.  Ras stands up and drops bombs.  Mike is back up and they are in the center.  Mike rushes in for a takedown and Ras connects with a teep to the chest.  Mike goes down in pain and ref stops the fight.

Ras Hylton defeats Mike Hansen via verbal submission to kick at 1:50 in Rd 1.









155 PRO Jesse Erickson 9-5 (CMBJJ) vs Jon Lemke 5-7 (Team Irish)

Jesse connects with a high kick.  Jesse keeps going high.  Jon is working his jabs.  Great striking from both fighters.  Jon gets in a good punch.  Jesse misses with a jumping kick.  Jon fires back with with a couple of rights that connect.  One drops Jesse and Jon is going hard for the finish.  Jesse has his legs up and looking for a triangle and ref stops the fight.  Early stoppage I feel with both of these caliber of fighters.  Crowd is booing very loudly.

Jon Lemke defeats Jesse Erickson via ref stoppage to strikes at 1:15 in Rd 1.  Jesse is very upset with the stoppage and I agree.









155 PRO Ryan Sanders 12-8 (Young’s) vs John Ortolani 8-10 (S. Tampa)

Ryan connects with a head kick right off the bat that drops John.

Ryan Sanders defeats John Ortolani via head kick ko at 15 seconds in Rd 1.
