Portland, Maine (July 13, 2022) – New England Fights (NEF) returns with its next mixed-martial-arts (MMA) event “NEF 48: Heatwave” on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at the Rink at Thompson’s Point in Portland, Maine. The event will be NEF’s first outdoor event since “NEF 8” in 2013. Earlier today, the fight promotion announced the addition of an amateur women’s strawweight bout to the card. BJ Garceau (2-1) will meet Maria Clinton (2-0) at a fight weight of 115 pounds.
BJ Garceau will return to the NEF cage for the first time since the fall of 2021. At “NEF 45” last November she choked Hayley Martin (0-1) unconscious just 23 seconds into the first round. It was Garceau’s first fight following the COVID-19 pandemic, and also her first since suffering a loss to Chelsea Tucker (3-3) in 2018. Garceau represents Young’s MMA based in Bangor, Maine.
"I love being outside during the summer in Maine and why not get in a good ole’ fight while soaking up the sun at Thompson’s point this year,” asked Garceau. “I can’t wait to get back in Portland and put on a show this summer while being surrounded by my favorite people.
“After my last fight Coach Young and I have continued working on improving not just my physical skills but tuning my mental skills and integrating them into my game plan,” she continued. “I’ve been going through a lot of changes medically, personally and professionally and without MMA I don’t know where I’d be right now. I feel more prepared for this fight than for any other in my career and am excited to go out and show all the hard work I have put in since last stepping into the NEF hexagon.
“MMA is as much a mental struggle as it is a physical one. I have trained tirelessly during fight camp, and have had to confront my own shortcomings and find a way to persevere through them. This is what I am fighting for. I am fighting for my health, both physical and mental. I am fighting for my friends and family, and the people who support me. When I step into the cage on the 30th they will have my back. None of us can do it alone, and I am lucky that I don’t have to. My opponent this time will be the toughest I have ever had to face. I am confident in my approach and my preparation. And I know the challenge I have in front of me. Let’s let the chips fall where they may."
Undefeated Maria Clinton will make her NEF debut in the fight with Garceau. She began her amateur MMA career last fall and has won both of her previous bouts via decision on fight cards in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. Clinton represents Renzo Gracie PEI based on Prince Edward Island, Canada.
“I am so excited to travel to Maine for my third amateur fight,” noted Clinton. “I am looking forward to fighting in the states and meeting new people. I seek challenges and new environments so I am eager to make my NEF debut.
“I cannot wait to step into the cage and put on a good fight for the NEF promotion. I believe my opponent and I will be ready to put on an entertaining fight. I am excited to showcase all areas of my game and I am looking to mix it up. Fans can expect a high pace exciting fight between two prepared athletes.”
“NEF 48: Heatwave” takes place on July 30, 2022, at the Rink at Thompson’s Point in Portland, Maine. Tickets for the event are on sale now at www.NewEnglandFights.com/Tickets/. The event will be the promotion’s first in the outdoors since 2013.
