Cage Titans Prevail 7/27/2012 Review

--We will be updating this and adding pics so keep checking...We apologize for the lack of live updates...we were all at the show and could only do so much from our cell phones..
--Place is off the hook. Three fights down. Fourth starting. I'll catch you up as soon as time permits. Awesome action so be ready for great stuff.

Fight 1: Brian Morales (Trifecta 0-0) vs. Asi-Yahola Somburu ( Doomsday 0-1)

They battle it out and Brian ends up getting the takedown and getting the ref stoppage from ground and pound. Great way to kick off the night.

Fight 2: Dan Dubuque (ATT 0-0) vs Scott Dwyer (USMMA 0-0)

This fight was a real close battle between both fighters. Scott had the more dominant positions and controlled enough of the fight to win the rounds and get the majority decision.

Fight 3 Mike Rodriguez ( Trifecta 1-0) vs Isaiah Queen (Anubis 1-0)

Isaiah tries some takedown attempts but Mike is just too strong and defends well. Isaiah eventually gets the takedown and Mike reverses into half guard and then passes to mount. He lays some ground and pound and then takes Isaiah's back and lays some more ground and pound down til he gets the ref stoppage. Isaiah had a great amateur debut last Saturday in Dover, NH and Mike looks very impressive again in his second fight. We were all very impressed by him. Keep up the great work Mike.

Fight 4 Stefanos Kampouris (NEMA 0-0) vs Manny Bermudez (SSSF 0-0)

Rnd 1 Stefanos beckons Manny to bring it with a hand gesture as they come to the center where Manny gives him everything and more. The round sees Manny take it to Stefanos via knees and ground and pound that looks like it hurts.

Rnd 2 and Stefanos brings action to the fight in the form of kick combinations. Manny takes the striker down and administers swift and powerful body shots, mounts, isolates the left arm where he sets up a reverse triangle. Stefanos sits up unto it in a sweep attempt, but only worsens his position. He's tapping out at 1:26 of the second round.

Fight 5 Ken Markwat (10th Planet 0-1) vs. JP White (Lauzon MMA 1-1)

Rnd1 sees work from the clinch by both men JP is the aggressor here and takes the round.

Rnd 2 has the men return to the clinch, but Ken is able to bring the action to the mat where JP takes top position while working to pass a very active Markwat guard. Ken wants to finish the round with a triangle or armbar, but has to settle for merely surviving the pressure of JP who remains on top throughout.

Rnd3 and Ken gets across the cage quickly to set the pace. He forces JP, now noticably tiring, to the ground with body pressure. It looks bad for JP with a loose half butterfly guard, but he pulls Ken's arm through for a deep arm bar. Ken defends by standing and JP uses that to keep things moving his way, Ken realizes this to late as the added weight and precision positioning are to much. He falls to the mat and hooks a leg over JP looking for leverage where there is none and JP applies the last bit of pressure to ellicit the tap. 1:45 in the second round JP by arm bar.

Fight 6   Anthony Pepdjonovic (Trifecta 0-0) vs. Floran Kacaku (Doomsday 0-1)

Rnd 1
Anthony is the quicker and much more dynamic fighter. Floran is looking solid landing punches with some heat, but Anthony's speed, agility, and intuition keep him positionally safe until he takes Floran's back, sinks in a deep rnc and submitting the slower man. 1:09 of the 1st round, Anthony wins via RNC

Fight 7   Shayne Stephenson (Independent 2-3) vs. Mark Cardarelli (USMMA 1-1)

Shayne comes out looking strong and ready to roll, but so does Mark. After the two paw at eachother a bit the fight transitions to the mat following a push to the cage Mark initiates. He leaves his head down to the outside and gets a taste of Shayne's guillotine. He moves to center and finds himself in a weak triangle for most of the round. Mark makes good use of the time delivering plenty of hammer fists and strikes to the body with knees. The round ends with Mark dumping Shayne to one side and sinking in a rear naked choke at the bell.

Rnd 2 is where Mark moves in for the kill. He takes Shayne right down with a wrestlers style trip/ dump. The two exchange top position with little being done in terms of damage done. At the ten second warning Mark is in a perfect position to arm bar, but Shayne is defending. Mark takes a quick second, assesses the situation, and determines he will take the arm, but delivers a barrage of hammer fists first to soften him up. Two seconds later and Shayne is outstretched with the ref pulling the two apart. Did Mark finish in time? Why yes, yes he did. Great finish and great show of control. Shayne may be a bit slower with his left from now on.

Fight 8   Rourke Devlin (Death Roll 1-0) vs. Ricky Proctor (Lauzon 0-0)

Rnd 1 Ricky, a Lauzon product, comes out hammer and tongs. He pushes Rourke past the breaking point within 50 seconds and taps Rourke out with a RNC.

Fight 9   Edward Gillis (Doomsday 0-0) vs. Eddie Cornet (8 Elements 0-0)

Rnd 1

Somebody is coming through this cage tonight. These are big men banging it out in the cage. They clinch and slam against the corner post moving the whole cage 6" in each direction. They go to the ground and Gillis controls Tue round from here. He transitions well from side - to scarf - to mount - to side control throughout the 3 minutes. The round ends and both men are more than a little winded.

Rnd 2 begins on the feet, but quickly Gillis covers Cornet with top control. The round is super charged with Americana attempts from Gillis that Cornet finds a way out of and back to the feet. Gillis hip tosses Cornet and finds top position again where he finishes the round in mount.

My thoughts ~Great pace for a heavyweight bout.

Rnd 3 has both men digging deep. Gillis takes Cornet down early and mounts him. Cornet is losing the pace war. Gillis wins in :28 seconds due to arm triangle. No surprise there. Gillis showed he could move and was looking for that back in the 1st round after his transition to scarf control.

Fight 10   Shane Decristoforo (United 2-3) vs. Remo Cardarelli (USMMA 1-0)

Shane is coming out guns blazing for the first minute and a half. He takes the fight to Remo with knees and lots of clinch work. He gets the trip for a takedown. Remo answers in kind with a lightening quick return to the feet. He takes another quick attack from Shane and uses the aggressive forward movement to turn his opponents energy against himself. There is a quick take down from the clinch, Tai fighter style. He mounts the back and punishes Shane for a minute then just at the bell sinks in a deep triangle. Remo wins 2:47 in the first with submission.  Pretty crazy that these guys fought at 120lbs.  If you are keeping track at home the Fighting Cardarelli's won both fights and made the sweep.  How great is it to fight on a card as your father and both win??  Pretty special if you ask me.  Great job Cardarellis.

~The crowd loves every minute of the action here tonight. Feels like a kick ass rock concert with DJMagnumm never missing a beat, Pres. Mike P brought in a great new MC with a look and a tone of a just off Broadway playwright with a five o clock shadow, dressed down suit, and voice strong enough to bring his fellow Americans to ovations and patriotic recourse also managed to have the subtle ability to seem fresh with every introduction. Harry Jones sets a new bar in MMA entertainment. A repeat performance is hoped for. The lighting seems good. Darkness is used between bouts until the fighters have both entered the cage. This definitely helps with dramatic effect. It is also handy in finding those folks that the MC had to keep reminding, "filming was not permitted".

~Come on folks seriously the videos come out soon enough.

Fight 11  Anthony Soto (Rukus 0-2) vs. Matt Haney (SSSF 0-0)

Rnd 1 Soto comes out fast. Haney seems reluctant to stand and trade, but has nothing on the ground working in his favor. Soto controls all the action even allowing the fight to return to the feet. The round ends with Soto on top.

Rnd2 Haney finds his fight in the rest period and ups the imtensity temporarily gaining a side control where he lands big shots for a minute. The effect is immediate because Soto go on the defensive to fight through the round.

Rnd 3 is quick. Soto beats Haney to a pulp in the first minute.

Fight 12  Joey DiSalvo (Trifecta 0-0) vs. Nick Muto (CCFA 2-0)

Rnd 1 Joey makes Muto pay for gettin in the cage. He is all over Muto. You have to be here to see this. My words aren't going to even come close.

Rnd 2 is the best yet as big Joe makes Muto fly through the air twice with crisp wrestling throws. Trifecta is where it's at tonight. These men pushed the pace and probably have fight of the night here folks. Joey makes it a four fight win streak for team trifecta when he finishes Muto with a RNC. Just amazing.

Intermission Awards are given out.

~I enjoy this part of the show most. It's always great to see these men work, but to be recognized for it is something you have to see. They have so many reactions. Often surprised, most humbled, even some cocky bastad's. I love seeing them all. They are "The Fight" there would be nothing else if it weren't for them.

Ko of the night Mike Rodriguez - Team TriFecta

Sub of night "The Fighting Cardarelli's" our favorite local father/son project both finish there opponents and by the same submission, RNC

Fight of the night "The Earth Bender" Joey Disalvo and Nick Muto.

Keep your eye out for Mike Rodriguez

Team Trifecta went 4-0 on the night...we had to get a group shot!

Main card fights

Fight 13  Matt Tullos vs Cory Pickering 145lb Ammy Title 5x 3min rnds

Rnd1 Matt takes Cory to the ground where Cory works his Jiu-Jitsu from the bottom. Two arm bar attempts and Matt maintains the top position. Tullos gets back mount and a brief RNC attempt to complete his domintaion of the round. Cory weathers the storm and at least brings it back to the feet in the final seconds.

Rnd 2 sees Cory looking to push pace and take the score card back. The defending champ looks rocked and Matt swarms hoping for a stoppage. Pickering shows his veteran toughness as he absorbs the punishment, but in the end he is out positioned and winded as we come back to have rnd3.

Rnd 3 and Tullos brings Pickering to the mat in the opening seconds. He is on top working lots of knees and fighting to let those hands loose. Pickering is helpless to do anything other than defend until the last ten seconds where he is saved from a submission choke by the bell. This fight is going to a fourth round.

Rnd4 is where champions are born and slain. Tullos covers Pickering in mount, Pickering gives up his back to his detriment where Tullos sinks in the RNC for the title.

~Easily could have been FOTN

Fight 14   Erik Sommer (CTMMA 1-1) vs. Roger Brackett (Lakeville 5-3)

Rnd1 Erik works a quick victory over Roger in our first pro match. The win comes via a methodically applied RNC at 2:31 in the first. It wasn't the exciting win we had hoped for, but it was a great show of technique and concentrated effort.

Fight 15   Garrett Moldoff (Death Roll 0-0) vs. John Johnston (SYT 2-0)

Rnd1 Garrett brings the fight to John straight away proving that he should be taken pretty seriously. It looks like John has a moment of disbelief as the younger man seems pretty far away in terms of range when striking. The lanky lad only awakens the true beast that is Big John. John weathers the storm and finds a home for some big strikes. The big man places some ill placed hands on the back of the kids skull and the ref is not calling out warnings of any kind. In my opinion the second Garrett was on all fours turned away from Big John the ref should have been on it. One could argue that the first punch that was base of skull to base of spine earned Garrett a five minute recovery (Like when you get hit in the junk). You could see it was going to be brutal from the look on both their faces. Garrett's dazed look and John's focused rage where pretty telling. All in all the fight went as expected with the Legendary Sityodtong crew making all the calls from the sideline and Big John playing the game and full-filling his destiny. Fight over in the first round to TKO ref stoppage.

Fight 16  John Downey (Extreme 1-9) vs. Bill Mahoney ( SSSF 12-5)

Rnd 1. This fight was sponsored by your mom, hahaha

Mahoney gives up the position by allowing Downey to take him down with a double leg slam, Bill takes Downey's arm home in a body bag. Fight is over in 50seconds. Mahoney gets on the soap box for a minute to drive home the importance of training well rounded mma fighters. He addresses the many schools with strict ties to traditional forms of combat as well as the small camps of brawlers like Team Ravenous. Well said Bill, we wish you well.

Fight 17   Ricardo Georges (TPS 0-2) vs. Chip Pollard (CCFA 6-4)

Rnd 1. Ricardo begin the round with plenty of big leg kicks that rival the surgical hands of Pollard. Ricky gets cut over the right eye in an exchange and the tempo begins to favor the CCFA fighter. Pollard is poised and patient throughout the remainder of the round.

Rnd 2 Sees some great exchanges between both fighters. Ricardo catches a kick and puts pollard on the mat, but seems confused and never moves to keep the downed man in a bad position, Pollard stands unchallenged. Both men continue this war on the feet. Ricardo is working angles and constant head movement. He throws in a takedown attempt that Pollard easily reads and counters. There will be a 3rd round.

Rnd3 and the crowd is into it 110%. Chants go up and hands are thrown in the cage. Pollard begins a slow march toward victory and Ricardo is forced to retreat time and again. Ricardo tries for the takedown again, and again is forced to retreat. Pollard is throwing punches in bunches all over the body and face of Georges. Ricky seems tired while Pollard keeps him against the cage, cutting off all the angles. The pace is snail like as we close out the round, but Pollard is finding a way to stay ahead and Ricky is just too tired. Pollard wins via judges scorecard.

Fight 18 Aniss El Hajjajy vs Jimmy Davidson 155lbs Pro Title

Rnd1 Aniss takes everything Jimmy dishes out, they make plenty of contact although not much looks to be dangerous. The two spend a few short minutes on and off the floor where it is clear that Aniss has a comfort zone. Jimmy keeps a constant pressure right to the bell.

Rnd2 here we have two determined fighters giving it all they have. Aniss spends most of the round under the ruthless rule of Jimbo Slice. Some very close calls ensue with Jimmy taking the back and threatening with RNCs eventually Aniss is able to force the scramble. He covers Jimmy up at the end of the round, but it isn't enough to take the round.

Rnd3 Tired fighters make an all out attempt to bring this contest to an end once and for all. It doesn't happen. Aniss tries for a knee bar in the closing seconds after spending another round with Jimmy on his back.

Rnd 4 the tide is turning. Aniss controls the entire round with power and punches. Where this comes from I can only guess. It doesn't have a distinct appeal such as panic, or worry, but also seems unlike the man in his cardio. I don't know him or his training so I couldn't really say either way. It was fun to watch though. Jimmy had no answer to the strikes and ended the round on his knees. Aniss is feeling a second wind.

Final round

Rnd5. Jimmy steels himself for the last round and beats Aniss with a crucifix and strikes forcing his opponent to tap. In an battle for the top position there was no contest. Jimmy took it away and kept it in a 5 round barn burner. Keeps the belt...

My friends at Sucker Punch Athletics said hello and some of my favorite MMA people could be seen walking around. Thanks for the support guys it means a ton to me. It was great breaking in City Boy for his many returns to The Plymouth Memorial Hall. There were no bad seats. Jere put his photography skills to the test with limited results. We'll figure out what we need and then we will get it so we are always "Getting you closer to the cage."
