Cage Titans Releases Their Fight Card For January 25th, 2014 Show

Cage Titans returns at the end of this month on January 25th, 2014 at Plymouth Memorial Hall.  Up until this point they announced the heavyweight showdown between Juliano Coutinho and John Orr.  They also previously announced Billy Giovanella against Andy Aiello at 125lb professional fight.  Now they just released the near complete fight card.  Cage Titans website says that more fights will be added so stay tuned but as you all can see the show is going to a solid one once again.  Some of the other fights announced are a rematch between Shannon Harney and Erin Cooney but this time it will both be their pro debut!  Another great match up is Kevin Schneider from SSSF (3-0) taking on Redline's Billy Keenan (4-2).  I am also excited to see the amateur debut of CCFA's Ryan Kane.  I have talked with Loco Lobo in the past about Ryan and I know he will be ready to get that W on January 25th.  The rest of the fight card is found below.

Fans React To CES's Announcement of Kin Moy vs. Andre Soukhamthath

If you haven't heard yet CES just recently announced undefeated Kin Moy from Team Redline will be fighting Andre Soukhamthath at the next CES show on January 24th, 2014.  Mass-MMA.com and Regional Fight Sports have already written their articles so I thought instead of writing the same thing I would post a few of the reactions that I found on facebook to the announcement of this fight.

First one is from local photographer Rich O and he is right on point with his comment!

Next up is Kin Moy's announcement of his fight saying pretty much what we all know and that is you don't want to miss this fight!

Lastly the last post is from Andre Soukhamthath himself saying he is going to start 2014 of his mma career off with a bang!

UFC 168 Results and Thoughts

Saturday night's UFC 168 was a memorable one for sure.  There were so many great fights on that night and I figured I would post the results and give my 2 cents to it all.  Obviously most people have heard the main event result in which Anderson Silva suffered a broken leg and went down in pure agony.  It was the 'snap heard 'round the world. Chris Weidman went over right away to make sure he was ok as you can see in the picture.  Now this was such a fluke thing that has only happened twice ever in the UFC.  Nobody did anything wrong and it was just as Jesse Camp from Warrior Nation stated "a perfect storm." I will admit, I couldn't watch the slow mo replay because I don't like to see bad breaks like that. Well Anderson underwent surgery and is going to leave the hospital early this week.  The surgery was a success and they don't know his thoughts yet on if he will fight again. However broken legs do take around 3 to 6 months to heal.  His future is uncertain but I know we all don't want to see him go out like that.  In my opinion he is the greatest mma fighter of all time.  I think he can return for sure but if he will ever be a champ again, to me that is doubtful.  Hats off to Weidman on the win and it seems that he has a date with Belfort in his future.

Predictions for UFC: 168

Don Frye speaks and WesternMassMMA.com listens.
Our friends on the West coast sent us the link a few days ago.

The only thing I can say negative about the vid overall is that it seems a bit outdated.  Didn't Family Guy already bring Brian back?  Other than that The Predator is a great host and plays the part well.  Hats off to the team that produced this for achieving an entertainment level seldom reached by independent filmakers on topics like this.  It'll be fun to see what they come up with next for Don Frye to overkill with masculinity and patriotism.

Thanks Lorainne Gaimari for the link and please send us more MMA footage with either Don or Ally. ~The Artist

CityBoy's Take On UFC 168: Weidman vs. Silva II

UFC is back with one of their biggest cards of the year on December 28th.  It is so big that they decided to jack up the price around $5 for the PPV.  Time will tell if this was a good move or poor move.  UFC stated they were just doing it for this card for now and seeing how it goes.  The main event is of course Chris Weidman(10-0) defending his title against Anderson Silva (33-5).  Silva lost the first battle in which he was showboating and ended up getting caught and ko'd.  As Silva says "I Back" so I know he will be ready to take back his belt.  I think Silva will win this one with a KO of his own and take his title back.  Then for Co Main event is Ronda Rousey(7-0) against Miesha Tate (13-4).  We all saw how much they hate each other in the Ultimate Fighter show and it all comes down to this fight.  Rousey has won all 7 of her pro fights by armbar and I see lots of critics say she is a one trick pony.  Well you know what?  It works and until someone defends her armbar then she is going to keep collecting them.  I think Rousey will win this one again although it may make to round 2.  The other fight on the main card that I am excited about is Josh Barnett(33-6) against Travis Browne(15-1-1).    As usual with the UFC this match up is razor close.  I am going to give the edge to Barnett in this one and I think he will win it by submission.  Lastly the other fight that has me pumped is John Doomsday Howard(21-7) taking on Siyar Bahadurzada(21-5).  John's last appearance in UFC he won by split decision against Uriah Hall.  I don't think many of the outsiders were expecting that but of course all of us in New England were rooting for Doomsday and had his back.  His opponent Siyar is a solid fighter with most of his wins coming by ko/tko just like Doomsday.  This is going to be a war for sure and I got Doomsday winning this one by tko in round 2.  The full fight card as along with the station and times are available below.  As always Boss's Picks will be posted on Saturday and let us know your thoughts on this card.

“John Raio is one of the most popular, recognizable regional fighters in New England mixed martial arts,” stated NEF MMA co-owner and promoter Nick DiSalvo. “We’re ecstatic that John has chosen to stay with NEF and see through the rest of his career with us. Since the beginning, we’ve always worked together to build the sport in the state of Maine—and it’s going to be a great start to 2014 knowing that we will continue to further those efforts for the foreseeable future while John is still fighting.”

MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT ON TAP FOR NEF XII IN LEWISTON

[NEF Press Release]

Lewiston, Maine (December 13, 2013) – New England Fights Mixed Martial Arts (NEF MMA) today announced the addition of a professional middleweight title fight to the promotion’s February 8, 2014 card. The event, entitled “NEF XII,” will take place at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston and will feature reigning Maine State MMA Middleweight Champion Jesse Peterson (7-4) defending his title against the challenge of "Ruthless" Mike Zichelle (6-3).

“Adding this fight is like putting the icing on top of the cake," said NEF MMA co-owner and promoter Nick DiSalvo.  "The pro card was stacked to begin with, especially considering the signing earlier this week of the Marcus Davis-Ryan Sanders fight.  Now you add Zichelle and Peterson to that mix and you have a quality main card the likes of which only NEF can put together for the fans."

Peterson, a native of Rumford, Maine who splits his training between Central Maine Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (CMBJJ) and South Shore Sport Fighting (SSSF), won a state wrestling championship for Mountain Valley High School in the 189-pound division in 2000.  Following a successful 4-2 start to his professional MMA career, Peterson was forced to take an extended leave from the sport.  After remaining dormant for over three years, Peterson returned in early 2012 to compete for NEF MMA.  He racked up several victories over the course of that year before submitting Cody Lightfoot (6-5) in a thrilling, come-from-behind fashion to become the state's first middleweight MMA champion.

NEF MMA ANNOUNCES MARCUS DAVIS VS RYAN SANDERS AT NEF XII

[NEF Press Release]

Lewiston, Maine (December 9, 2013) – New England Fights Mixed Martial Arts (NEF MMA) today announced the addition of a professional welterweight contest to the fight promotion’s February 8, 2014 card. The event, entitled “NEF XII,” will take place at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston and will feature UFC-veteran and Maine MMA legend Marcus “The Irish Hand Grenade” Davis (22-10) against Young’s MMA standout “THE” Ryan Sanders (5-4).

“This is set to be the biggest battle in Maine mixed martial arts history between fighters from the two biggest schools in the state,” stated NEF co-owner and promoter Nick DiSalvo. “Since we started NEF MMA over two years ago, people have been calling for a Davis-Sanders clash-in-the-cage based on the history and bad blood between these two. Finally, on February 8th, we’re going to witness this highly anticipated fight. For followers of Maine mixed martial arts, there’s no bigger bout that we could make right now. This matchup is a nuclear bomb.”

NEF FIGHTER MATT DESROCHES ANNOUNCED AS CAST MEMBER OF THE UFC’S “THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER”

[NEF Press Release]

Rumford, Maine (December 7, 2013) – New England Fights Mixed Martial Arts (NEF MMA) is proud to announce that former NEF fighter Matt DesRoches (4-0) was recently announced as a cast member of The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC) famed “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series “TUF Nations: Canada vs. Australia.” UFC officials announced DesRoches as a member of the cast last Thursday.

“TUF Nations: Canada vs. Australia” is the newest iteration of “The Ultimate Fighter.” Eight middleweights and eight welterweights will be divided into two teams based on their nationalities. Filmed just north of Montreal, the 12-episode season will air on Wednesdays on Fox Sports 1 starting January 15th and will culminate with a three-hour live finale next year. It was announced that DesRoches will compete as a welterweight on the show.

Matt DesRoches’ last fight came when he made his NEF MMA debut last summer at NEF’s “Nations Collide: Canadian Invasion” event. DesRoches submitted Team Irish’s Jon Lemke (3-1) via armbar at 1:47 of the first round and handed Lemke the lone loss of his amateur and professional careers.

Coliseum To The Cage 12/6/2013 Review

[Photos will be added into this review]

We are here at Coliseum to the cage at Sportzone in Derry New Hampshire.  The place is filled with mma fans, I would estimate about 800-1000 fight fans.  John Vena is our host for the evening.  The sound system sounds great and they are playing some Pantera and Five Finger Death Punch to get fight fans in the mood.  There are four projectors projecting highlight of previous CTTC material up before the show which is a nice addition.  For tonight they have 9 fights with four professional fights which should make for a  solid evening.  John English and Steve Rita are the refs for tonight.  I am sitting at the media table with Dan Bonnell and his lovely wife.  Also to my left is Ron Washburn for RSW Management.  For other local celebrities I saw Peggy Morgan, John Fain, Marcus Davis and Cody Lightfoot. My internet and power is limited since I don't have a plug so I will be typing from my laptop briefly until the battery dies and then moving over to my cell phone so bare with me.  I gotta do what I can because the fight fans need their updates!!  The show is about to start so follow along...

Accomplished wrestler Hepburn joins Friday's stacked card

[CES Press Release]

LINCOLN, R.I. (Dec. 5th, 2013) – With roots already planted in three separate states, former national championship wrestler T.J. Hepburn is looking to plant one more in the competitive world of mixed martial arts.

Hepburn, a New Jersey native who grew up in Connecticut and wrestled collegiately in Nebraska, will return to the cage for the first time in more than a year on Friday, Dec. 6th, 2013 at Twin River Casino when he faces Rhode Islander Tundee Odumoso (1-1) on the undercard of “CES MMA XX” presented by Classic Entertainment & Sports.

Whether MMA is a legitimate career move or just a passing fancy for Hepburn (1-0, 1 KO) remains to be seen, but the scrappy, 5-foot-7 lightweight hopes to have an answer by the end of 2014, making Friday’s fight against Odumoso an important barometer as he moves forward with his career.

“I have a wife and two kids,” Hepburn said, “so if it doesn’t work for me this year, it’s the end of the road.

Coliseum To The Cage 'Rukus' 12/6/2013 Teaser

It has been a while since the last Coliseum to the Cage event but they are returning this Friday on December 6th to the SportsZone in Derry New Hampshire. They have an 12 fight fight card which included 4 pro fights and there are several good match ups on this one.  Tickets start at just $30 and can be found here all the way up to $100 bux for the SuckerPunch Skybox!  Their last show took place in March so Warchild and I are very excited to cover the show for you all.  Throughout their hiatus they have revamped their website courtesy of Apocalypse MMA so check it it out here.  If you have never been to the Sports Zone it is a nice gym type area and there are plenty of beer and pizza sold which is always a bonus.  Not enough? Well, the beautiful Brittany Baldi will be in attendance. Let me break down the card down for you...

Tyler Jacques vs Brett Trahan 170

For the first fight of the evening Tyler Jacques takes on Brett Trahan at 170lbs.  Tyler has a 2-3 record in which he won both of his fights by tko/ko.  For his losses he lost two by decision and one by submission.  His opponent Brett has a 4-1 record.  He has won 2 by submission, 1 decision and one by tko/ko stoppage.  His only loss was to Tyler Jacques back in July of 2012 and he is looking to avenge that loss.  As you can see this is an exciting match up and Tyler will be looking to show how much he improved and that his first win over Brett was no mistake.

Mitch Barish vs Adam Neilson 175

At 175lbs Mitch Barish takes on Adam Neilson for the second bout of the evening.  Mitch will be making his amateur debut and I believe trains with Wai Kru.  Adam will also be making his amateur debut.  Not much insight on this one with both fighters being new but it should be exciting.

Tom Hutchinson vs Stephen Desjardins 125

At 125lbs Tom Hutchinson will face off against Stephen Desjardins.  Tom is 1-0 and fights out of Team Triumph.  He fought for NEF against Jason Bell and won by submission in round 2.  I remember the fight well and it was an exciting and Tom looked very comfortable in the fight on all levels.  His opponent Stephen is 2-2 from Team Irish.  He has won a submission and one by decision so far in his amateur career.  He lost one by ko/tko and one by submission.  This is a real good match up and a tough fight for both fighters.  I have seen Stephen fight his last two fights for NEF and he looks very well prepared as well so that should make this a solid fight.

Paul Gaffney vs Bobby Jones 170

At 170lbs Paul Gaffney takes on Bobby Jones.  Paul trains out of Team Link and has an undefeated 3-0 record.  He first won by tko from a slam, then won by tapout to strikes.  In his last fight he had a 3 round war against JT Harold and won the decision.  Now he is ready to put his undefeated record on the line again.  He is a warrior who puts everything he has in each fight and does it all for his children.  He is a real nice guy as well.  I wasn't able to find out much about his opponent so we will have to wait and see how this one turns out.

Aaron Lacey vs Carl Langston 145

Next up Aaron Lacey squares off against Carl Langston at 145lbs.  Aaron fights out of Young's MMA and has a 2-0 record.  He won both of his fights by submission and he looked real good.  His last fight he submitted a good wrestler Caleb Hall up at NEF in Maine.  He will be looking to improve to 3-0.  His opponent Carl is from Balanced Ground MMA and comes into this fight with an 0-1 record.  He lost his first fight up at NEF against Mike Pieterson by submission in Rd 3.  I give the slight edge to Aaron Lacey in this fight but Balanced Ground MMA guys come ready for a fight and are always in it!

Nate Charles vs Ryan Dibartolomeo 155

Then Nate Charles takes on Ryan Dibartolomeo in a 155lb battle.  Nate is from Balanced Ground MMA and has a 1-7 record.  He lost the majority of his losses by decisions and submissions.  In his sole win he won with a very quick knockout of Rob Vandastine.  He will be looking to break his 3 fight losing streak.  Ryan is a 1-3 fighter traveling from Massachusetts.  He won a split decision in his last fight against Nermin Zilic.  Before that he lost 3 fights by decision and 2 to ko/tko to strikes.  This is a good match up for both fighters and I think it will be a good stand up battle.

Xavier Vargas vs. John Gardner 195

Xavier Vargas takes a last minute fight against John Gardner at 195 lbs.  Xavier is dropping down to 195 for this fight and has a 2-1 record.  He won both of his fights by using his fists.  His one loss came by way of the fist as well.  John is from Frosty's First Class MMA and comes into this fight with an 0-1 record.  He lost his only fight to Jeremy Stevens by tko stoppage to strikes in Rd 2 up in Maine at NEF.  He is hungry for his first ammy victory.  This is a nice addition to the card as both fighters have heavy hands which makes for a good time for the fans!

Dave Spero vs Erik Tseronis 170

For the last amateur fight of the evening Coach Dave Spero takes on Eric Tseronis in a 170lb showdown. Dave has a 2-2 record and runs his own school in New Hampshire.  His two losses came by decision and his two wins, one was by ko/tko and the other was a split decision.  He will be looking to break his .500 record.  His opponent Erik has a 3-3 record and trains out of Burgess MMA.  He lost two by submission and one by decision.  He won a decision and two by tko/ko to strikes.  As you can see on paper this is a dead even match up and it will be a good one.  Both fighters are very respectable guys and do so much for the sport of MMA.  I wish them both the best of luck and this fight is definitely a fight of the night potential!

Andrew Hughes vs Ricky Sylvester 170

For the first pro fight of the evening Andrew Hughes takes on Ricky Sylvester at 170lbs.  Andrew is from Team Irish and has an 0-1 record.  He was a 5-1 amateur and recently turned pro at a previous NEF and lost a decision to Joe Palazio.  He is very well rounded and won most of his amateur fights by submissions.  He will be hungry to get his first pro victory.  His opponent Ricky is a 1-1 record.  In his last fight he lost a unanimous decision to JT Harold and now he is turning professional.  I think Ricky will want to keep this fight standing and look for the knockout punch as it seems he is most comfortable standing while Andrew can stand and bang as well but if he needs to he will take it to the ground and try to work that submission.

RJ Letendre vs Dominic Warr 150

RJ Letendre is ready to battle Dominic Warr at a catch weight of 150lbs.  RJ is making his pro debut and fights out the Shop in NH.  He had a 2-1 amateur record with wins over Will Chan and Jesse Erickson.  I saw his last two fights and he did an excellent job at controlling the fight and getting the ref stoppage to strikes.  Dom is from Wai Kru and he is 4-3 as a pro. He is fresh off a submission victory over Keegan Hornstra at the last Cage Titans.  Dom loves to stand and bang and this is going to be a good one.  This one definitely has fight of the night potential!

Devin Powell vs Bruce Boyington 155

For the second to last pro fight of the evening Devin Powell faces off against Bruce Boyington at 155lbs.  Devin Powell has a 2-0 record and trains out of The Shop.  He has a decision victory and a submission victory so far in his professional career.  He hasn't fought in over a year but is looking to return in a big way against Bruce Boyington.  Bruce trains with Young's MMA and has a 5-6 record which includes Tapology's 96th Greatest Knockout of All Time.  Also it should be noted that his losses were to New England beasts like Rick Hawn, John Ortolani, Dez Green and Smeef Cotito.  All 5 of his wins have come from striking so watch out fight fans!

Bill Jones vs Vovka Clay 145

For the main event Bill Jones takes on Vovka Clay for a 145lbs battle.  Bill is head coach from The Shop and has an 11-7 record.  The majority of Bill's wins have come from submissions.  For his losses most of them were from submissions as well.  He has fought many tough fighters and always rises to the occasion.  His opponent Vovka is from Team Triumph and will be making his pro debut.  He has a stellar amateur career and went 6-2 with 5 out of 6 wins coming by way of submission.  He is fresh off a win over Dom Cofone by Peruvian Necktie from November 9th and will be looking to get his first professional victory.  This is going to be an interesting one as Vovka is giving up lots of fight experience in this fight from the professional side but however he did see lots of amateur action.  We will have to see how this one plays out and I for one can't wait!

There you have the complete breakdown of every fight Coliseum to the Cage has to offer you all this Friday in Derry NH.  As you can see they are all solid match ups and it will make for a great night of fights.  Warchild will be there taking photos and I will be there doing the writing with the live play by play (as long as I have WiFi).  I would like to give a shout out to Coliseum to the Cage for keeping us up to date on their mma action.  They plan on closing out the year with a bang and this is in my opinion their best card to date.  Come on out and enjoy the mma action and I promise you, you won't be disappointed.  See you all there!

CES XX 12/6/2013 Teaser

CES is back at the Twin River Casino in Rhode Island on December 6th and in a big way.  This will be their last mma show of the year and they are planning on closing out the year in a huge way.  Pat Sullivan and the rest of the CES crew have packed this card full of the best local talent in New England.  Now there are a few fights with the local guys having their opponents flown in whom are not heard of in this area.  CES has been doing this for the last few shows and it is sometimes a toss up.  The 'outsiders' sometimes live up to their record and sometimes they don't.  Why have they been doing this?  Well I would say for two reasons.  One they have some last minute drop outs and secondly is because the other top fighters in New England are already signed with another fight for another promotion at that time.  CES has redeemed themselves on this card and like I said it is stacked top to bottom in this all professional show.  Tickets are on sale starting at around $30-40 so get your tickets by visiting here or of course at the box office that day.  There are a total of 10 professional fights and here is the breakdown...
