NAGA Albany Saturday, March 10th

On March 10th, the North American Grappling Association comes to Sienna College in Albany (Colonie), NY. The NAGA’s are world renowned for putting on the largest events with the most competitors.

Sure they’ve been to Paris, Hawaii, Toronto and pretty much everywhere coast to coast but this is the first time they set out to penetrate the Upstate New York market. While saying Upstate is the Mecca for mixed martial arts might be an exaggeration or more accurately, a flat out lie, it IS home to a who’s who of relevant schools, teams and fighters. Jon Jones, Marc Stevens, Anthony Leone, Randy Smith, Eric Charles, Tamden McCrory, Jerry Spiegel, Bombsquad, CNY MMA and many more, hail from New York State’s better half.

While this may be the wishful thinking of an MMA enthusiast from Upstate, Albany stands to be a crossroads for the sport when it is finally legalized. The city is no more than three hours from every MMA school in the North East / New England region. This is all the more reason to expect a huge turnout, even for a regularly packed tournament.

For those of you new to the NAGA circuit, this is a place where ANYONE can test their grappling abilities. Four divisions from beginner to advanced allow people to compete no matter where they are with their learning, experience and abilities. Massive turn outs stack each weight class and division with grapplers giving you the best bang for your buck. Most MMA professionals have taken part in these tournaments at some point in their lives so this is a great place to meet and compete with future and current fighters. There are also divisions for youth and older competitors, gi and no-gi options, awards for all the youngsters, medals for competitors who place and belts for advance division winners.

In relevance to Western Mass, Albany is less than 90 minutes from Springfield and the same distance from Worcester as it is Syracuse so I expect to see you all there. You know who you are so be sure to be there to test yourself against NY’s finest.

You can pre-register online at NAGAFighter.com or sign up at the door. At NAGA events, the super competitive can elect to weigh in the night before (6-8PM) for better weight class placement. Doors open the next day at 8 and stick pretty close to the anticipated schedule you can also find on their website. Hope to see you all there!

Proctor's 'Aggression' Pays Off

Joe Proctor from Team Agression

The Ultimate Fighter 15 cast was announced today and among the names on there is a Massachusetts native fighter, Joe Proctor from Team Aggression.  He is one of the 32 fighters to fight to make it on the show and its going to be a great one.  It is going to be airing Live on FX starting March 9th at 9 p.m. ET/PT.  After that live episode the rest of the shows will follow with pre-taped house content and the live fight at the end of each show of course.  The premiere on March 9th is slated to be a 2.5 hour show with 16 live elimination fights.  It is literally fight hard or go home mentality!! All of the following episodes will air on Fridays until the finale on June 1st. I am really excited to see the transition from SpikeTV to FX.  I am even more enthusiastic about them moving the show to Friday.  They miss many viewers who want to watch it live but have to go to work in the mornings so moving to Fridays is a great move I feel.

It isn't easy to make it on the show.  He beat out another Mass fighter Matt Bessette to make it on the show.  Proctor, a 7-1 fighter is no stranger to this site.  His last three fights were for Reality Fighting which we covered and he was victorious in all three that we saw.  Proctor had to fly out to Vegas for the tryouts.  "To get to this point I had to go through some hurdles. The grappling and mitt portion went great and then the interview portion went just as well" Proctor says.

Gladiator BJJ: A night with my MMA family

It had been almost three months since I joined my friends and celebrated the opening of Gladiator BJJ in West Springfield.  Between the opening of my own team's dedicated training center, marital obligations, my responsibilities  here at WesternMassMMA.com, and my illness digging deep into my limited time the days passed and my efforts to journey down the I-91 corridor were unsuccessful, until tonight.
Over the past three weeks I have had a turn in my Crohn's symptoms which has allowed me to once again return to a more focused MMA training schedule, eating habits, and mindfulness. My goal is to be in good health and have brought my cardio up to competition level in time for the upcoming King Of The Mat tournament in a few weeks time.  With a plan and a mindset that I can and will achieve these goals I'd begun to think about making the trip to see my good friend Gabriel and his family at his school.  I can honestly say that I have never met people who's generosity and genuine kindness radiate like heat from an oven.  I hope that Erika will like the flowers I brought her.  I hate visiting my family without a small show of gratitude for having me in their home and to me The Santos Family is my family and their school is a home away from home that I am always welcome to visit.

1. When and Why did you get into MMA??

I first got in to MMA at the age of 17 years old when I first trained. I was getting a tattoo done and the tattoo artist was a MMA practitioner. He asked if I had ever done any type of training and I explained that I had done karate as a kid but that was it. He invited me to join his club and give MMA a try. I came down and trained for approximately 6 months. It was like a "fight club". There were some pretty crazy skilled guys there and we would train pretty heavy beating the crap out of each other, haha. He showed me some basic grappling moves and some striking, but I was pretty green at the time. Later on, I had to stop training because I was a varsity lacrosse player at my college and couldn't afford to get injured.

1. When and Why did you get into MMA??

I actually started MMA, by fighting in every other sport before finally stumbling upon one where that kind of behavior wasn't frowned upon. After a fight in Lacrosse, my coach pulled me off the field and was yelling "If you want to fight join a boxing gym!"... So we looked up gyms the next day and did just that. And that was 7 years ago now when I was 11.

And Now A Word From Our Partners

If you own a MMA gym, check out Zengu for wholesale pricing on MMA gear and traditional martial arts equipment. The site is easy to sign up for and importantly has no minimum order, so if you just need to pick up a couple of items, you still get wholesale pricing.

If you're a regular retail customer, a good choice is MMA Opinion, they sell the mma gear so many of the pros wear and are a little cheaper than the other gear suppliers like MMA Warehouse and the like.

No we did not get hacked.  This is one of our advertising partnerships with MMAHQ/Karate Depot...check out their sites...we wouldn't team up with them if we didn't think they were awesome!!

Bellator 63 Is Stacked With Massachusetts Locals

Bellator 63 which is set to take place on March 30th 2012 in CT at Mohegan Sun Casino is stacking their show with some all star locals from Massachusetts.  These fights will be on the undercard of the show so most likely won't be aired on MTV2 or EPIX but that does not mean that we all can't cheer them on at the casino live!!  We broke the news last week that Brandon Fleming was fighting on the card and is taking on P.J. Rogers.  Well to find out, he is not the only local fighter on this card.

Fight Video: CES Tyler King vs. Eric Bedard

This was one of my favorite fights of CES's last show.  It was on my list I had formulated in my head of top matchups I wanted to see for 2012.  This may be Bedard's last heavyweight fight as he cuts weight to 205.  This one was met at 225lbs and pay attention to a slim Tyler King.  He plans on continuing to fight at his regular weight 250 or so this fight was special. Enjoy!

Brandon Fleming To Fight For Bellator

Brandon Fleming, a 145lber who trains out of South Shore Sportsfighting has signed a deal with Bellator to fight on March 30th.  This is set to take place at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.

Brandon has decided to turn pro and in a big way!  He put on a spectacular amateur career and finished 7-0.  He fought tough battles and some of the fighters he defeated were Joe Pingitore and Shannon Soares.  Brandon tells me "I'm really excited to be making my pro debut for Bellator!"

He will be fighting on the undercard of the show most likely, so we can all pray that we will see him on MTV2 or EPIX.  His opponent is going to be P.J. Rogers who trains out of Connecticut.  "I know my opponent is making his pro debut like me so I'm just as excited to get in there. I really don't know too much about him besides I believe he is 6"1 and he has a background in kick boxing."  With Brandon's background in wrestling this makes for an awesome bout.

Brandon has had a tough time finding opponents in New England.  Being ranked #1 at the 145lb division made it difficult to match him up.  Going pro should help Brandon get some challenging opponents and with the deal with Bellator, this should be no problem.  Brandon was previously set to fight Amryan Aliyev at the AFO's April show but when this opportunity came up, it was just too good to pass up.  He was quickly replaced with fellow team mate Cory Pickering who is 4-0 and if Cory keeps it up, he may be getting a call to the big show as well.  "I would like to thank Prime Athletics for helping me out with this great opportunity.  Come out March 30th and support me! Bill Mahoney for president!" he says as we conclude our chat.  Congratulations Brandon and we hope to be there cheering you on.

With co-Main Events in place that feature seasoned and skilled veterans of the sport, fans will have the rare opportunity to see some well-known stars of MMA compete close to home.

Premier FC Sets Date For Upcoming Tournament Event

Premier FC has set the date for the start of their upcoming tournament that is set to take place right here in Western Mass!!  The date is April 1st and that is no joke!  This is on a Sunday and is sure to be a Sunday you won't forget.  This is a great way for amateurs to get experience and to win some great prizes.  We have not heard what the prizes will be in the form of but we will let you all know when we know.

I am real excited about the tournament because towards the end of the tournament, not only are we going to see some great matchups...we are going to see some matchups we might never see again.  Some of these matchups can only happen in a tournament.  If multiple people are in the tournament and they happen to be friends well guess what?? If they make it to the finals or semifinals they will have to fight!!  Like I said this makes for some interesting matchups.  Don't be afraid to enter this happens all the time, just look at the movie Warrior LOL.  That was all real right??

On a serious note the Premier FC 8 is set to take place at a location many of our fans in the northeast may never have heard of.  It is called the Log Cabin for obvious reasons, it looks like a log cabin.  It is located right off the highway and has an awesome atmosphere inside.  There are fireplaces inside and in the center of it will be the cage where all the magic will happen that night!!  There is plenty of parking but beware this event may sell out!  Tickets are set to go on sale via their website sometime next week so visit by clicking the Premier FC banner at the top right or by clicking here.  There will be other fights besides the tournament fights to feast on that night so anyone looking to enter the tournament or to fight on this show please email Karyn at karynwesch@yahoo.com.

CES 'Extreme Measures' Review February 3, 2012

Warchild and I arrived at CES right around 6:30pm.  The free valet courtesy of Twin River Casino is always awesome.  We were in very easily and I took my spot at the loooong media table.  This was Warchild's first time taking photos for us I think he did a great job.  Thanks for stepping up buddy. I was sitting next to our good friend Grant Tremelling who was writing for NortheastMMA.  Twin River Casino has two huge screens which has a live play of the action.  Fightstream does a great job with that and they post many of their fights on youtube so we can share with you all.  Well not specifically for us but you get the point ;)  There are lots of good food nearby at the Casino, I see people eating pretzels and KFC..you name it.  Everyone at the media table couldn't get on the Twin River wifi except one person so there was definitely something messed up.  Well I can't wait so onto the fights but before we start here is some eye candy for you ;)

LINCOLN, R.I. (Feb. 2, 2012) – Josh Hendricks made a strong first impression Thursday when he walked into the Twin River Casino to weigh in for Friday’s fight.

“He’s big!” said Hendricks’ opponent, Josh Diekmann. “He’s a little bigger than I thought. Whatever – I’ve fought big guys before. It’s neither here, nor there.”

Cage Titan's~Invasion~ The Artist's Review

On Saturday Jan.28,2012 The Artist, The Boss, and Blue Steel headed to Plymouth Memorial Hall in Plymouth,. MA to take in the first Cage Titan's MMA event of 2012.  It was approx. 6pm when we arrived and the venue was filling up quickly.  Despite the strong turn out The Boss and I parked directly across the street in a space we used last time.  A gem of a find.  Oh yeah and the parking is free downtown in Plymouth which is great.  The Hall stands as a proud representative on a block adjacent to a large church.  It's colonial feel is a patriotic reminder to the greatness of that age.  Up and in, once we got our press passes which we thoroughly appreciated and as always the staff was super friendly.  I even see Coop helping at the ticket table.  Cage Titans is a family and it runs smoother than any single promotion I've been to yet.  The main hall reflects that patriotic aesthetic by housing incredible museum quality flags.  Our freedom's symbols.
We are here to Invade something tonight so I set my mind to the task.  An incredible list of fighters coupled with the best fucking seating in MA.  Hands down the architecture is stunning once you get to the balcony you begin to see the magnitude of the space that seems disproportionate from the ground level.  I see a few people I recognize and more that I don't.  This is great because this shows growth.  All of these fighters are growing, evolving, propelling this sport and it's our duty to make sure they can.  That we all can.  I'm going to attend as many of the M.S.A.C. meetings as possible and I invite you all to make the trip as well.  Good things happen when people participate in the commonwealth.  It is after all our common resource and if we think we can do it better we have the right to attend and be heard.  For now though I want to listen and learn what the common issues are.  It's gotta be this building.  I want to fight.

1. When and Why did you get into MMA??

It’s a long story, but to make a long story short here’s how it happened. I was a senior in high school getting ready to go to college. I was recruited by a number of schools for soccer. My girlfriend Jamie than got pregnant, so I decided at that time that I needed to work full time and support my seed. I put college and soccer on hold but wanted to stay active. I always loved combat sports as a kid growing up and always wanted to box. A friend of mine took me to a gym the next town over (USMMA) and I’ve been hooked ever since.
