📰 NEWS--📰SHOREY RETURNS TO TAKE ON VASTA IN CLASSIC EXPERIENCE VS. YOUTH MATCHUP

[NEF PRESS RELEASE]

Bangor, Maine (October 5, 2023) – New England Fights presents its next mixed-martial-arts event “NEF 55: Glory Days” on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.  Earlier today, NEF announced the addition of a professional featherweight bout to the card.  Derek “Shatterproof” Shorey (4-9) will meet Anthony Vasta (3-4) at a fight weight of 145 pounds.

41-year-old Derek Shorey will make his return to the MMA cage after an absence of over six years.  Shorey, who began competing in the sport in 2010, was a regular on NEF cards in the early days of the promotion.  He made his pro debut at “NEF 14” in 2014.  Shorey appeared in the NEF cage a total of 16 times between 2012 and 2017.  Apropos for an event taking place on Veteran’s Day, Shorey is a proud veteran of the United States Navy.

“I am so excited to get back in that NEF cage, and give the NEF fans the best performance of my career,” exclaimed Shorey. “I don’t want to call this a comeback, as I feel like I never really even scratched the surface of my potential. That regret in and of itself is the reason I’m stepping back in the cage. Those closest to me that have learned of my interest in getting back into MMA have expressed concern, asking me all of these ‘what if’s,’ and the only response I can logically come to is simple. I would much rather live the rest of my life in a wheelchair than having to live with the regret that has tortured me for the past six years. I stepped away from MMA for personal reasons, but my own ‘what if’ never went away.

📰 NEWS--📰 VASTA ON MEUSE FIGHT: “I DON’T SEE WHERE HE HAS A SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGE OVER ME ANYWHERE”

 [NEF PRESS RELEASE]

Portland, Maine (April 26, 2023)

Learning from your mistakes, staying humble despite the wins, persisting through the inevitable losses and finding your home in the cage are all essential parts of the mixed martial arts journey.

At the tender age of 23, already with more professional fights on his ledger than amateur growth experiences, Anthony Vasta (2-3) of Defensive Edge MMA perhaps personifies that full range of emotions.

Vasta knows what it’s like to taste a losing streak in the sport, as well as how to bask in the afterglow of a job well done after bucking that trend in a matter of scintillating seconds.

Consistently fighting two to four hours from home in Burlington, Massachusetts, under the New England Fights banner, Vasta doesn’t fear stepping into neutral or enemy territory. He hasn’t shied away from advancing a weight class or moving up to a higher caliber of opponent.

[NEF PRESS RELEASE]

Portland, Maine (April 24, 2023) – New England Fights (NEF) returns to Aura in Portland, Maine on Saturday, May 13, 2023, with its next mixed-martial-arts (MMA) event “NEF 52: Zero Hour.” Earlier today, the fight promotion announced the addition of a professional lightweight bout to the card.  Anthony Vasta (2-3) will face Gerald Meuse (3-0) at a fight weight of 155 pounds.

Anthony Vasta will make his fifth appearance as a professional in the NEF cage where he is an even 2-2.  Vasta defeated Josh Beauparlant (0-5) at “NEF 51” earlier this year.  Vasta needed a mere 42 seconds to pound Beauparlant into oblivion in a dominant performance.  He also humbled Aaron Hughes (3-3) last year at “NEF 47,” forcing Hughes to tap in the second round to a D’Arce choke.  Vasta represents Defensive Edge MMA based in Wakefield, Massachusetts.

Bangor, Maine (September 4, 2022) – New England Fights (NEF) returns to Bangor, Maine on Friday, September 9, 2022, with its next mixed-martial-arts (MMA) event “NEF 49: Queen City Showdown.”  It will be NEF’s first event in Bangor in more than three years.  Earlier today, the fight promotion announced the addition of a professional lightweight bout to the card.  Jacob Deppmeyer (2-0) is scheduled to meet Anthony Vasta (1-2) at a fight weight of 155 pounds.

📰 NEWS--📰 ANTHONY VASTA: “WE’RE JUST GONNA SCHOOL THIS GUY, MAN.”

[NEF PRESS RELEASE]  Auburn, Maine (May 10, 2022)

Anthony Vasta and Aaron “Short Fuse” Hughes have been training partners and at least casual friends for a while, and Vasta sees no reason why the Massachusetts mixed martial artists won’t be able to push the reset button once their professional featherweight bout at NEF 47: “The Battle of L/A” is over.

Vasta doesn’t hesitate to acknowledge, however, that any current animosity between the two possibly stems from how quickly and unequivocally he accepted a proposal to step into the cage with Hughes.

“It was just thrown my way,” Vasta explained to host Steve Domenico in an episode of The Room Podcast. “(New England Fights co-owner and matchmaker) Matt Peterson offered it, and I was like, ‘Fuck yeah, let’s do it.’ It’s funny, ‘cause Aaron had messaged me the same day. He’s like, ‘Yo, NEF offered me this fight. I said no, ‘cause we train at Lauzon’s.’ I was like, ‘Oh, fuck, ‘cause I said yeah.’ And I then I guess he reconsidered or something, ‘cause the next day we were booked to fight.”

Vasta (0-1) and Hughes (1-2) both have made it crystal clear that they’re eager to hit the highway for their crossroads bout this Saturday, May 14 at Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn, Maine. Opening bell time for the card, NEF’s long-awaited return to the Twin Cities, is set for 7 p.m.

📰 NEWS--📰 HUGHES: “I AM GONNA FINISH HIM.”

[NEF PRESS RELEASE] Auburn, Maine (May 9, 2022)

In the case of Aaron “Short Fuse” Hughes (1-2) and Anthony Vasta (0-1), the time-honored truth that familiarity breeds contempt applies and gives a jagged edge to their scheduled professional featherweight bout at NEF 47: “The Battle of L/A.”

Hughes and Vasta have trained together off and on for a while, and they’ve remained cordial or at least civil enough to be in each other’s presence multiple times during the weeks leading up to the fight this Saturday, May 14 at Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn, Maine.

“Funny story is we’ve sparred together probably a good six or seven times at Lauzon MMA. We were actually training together in the same room together for this camp,” Hughes said in an interview with Ryan Jarrell of Between Rounds Radio. “Saturday morning sparring, I was there, he was there. We didn’t spar with each other, but I was watching him a little bit (and) he was watching me a little bit.”

After getting an up-close-and-personal peek at Vasta’s current skill set, Hughes is more outspoken than ever about his prospects to end the fight in short order.

Opening bell time for the card, New England Fights’ highly anticipated return to the Twin Cities, is set for 7 p.m.

🚨BREAKING NEWS--🚨VASTA AND HUGHES TO RETURN TO NEF CAGE ON MAY 14

[NEF PRESS RELEASE]

Auburn, Maine (April 5, 2022) – New England Fights (NEF) returns with its next mixed-martial-arts (MMA) event “NEF 47: The Battle of L/A” on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at the Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn, Maine.  Earlier today, the fight promotion announced the addition of a professional featherweight fight to the card.  Anthony Vasta (0-1) will take on Aaron “Short Fuse” Hughes (1-2) at a fight weight of 145 pounds.

Anthony Vasta made his NEF and professional debut earlier this year at “NEF 46,” losing a unanimous decision to Nathaniel Grimard (1-0).  Prior to that time, Vasta had been 1-1 as an amateur in the MMA cage.  He currently represents Defensive Edge MMA based in Wakefield, Massachusetts where he trains under another NEF veteran, Connor Barry (7-3).  Vasta will look for his first win as a professional competitor on May 14.

“After losing my debut all I wanted was to get right back in the cage for the next card and get that one back,” exclaimed Vasta. “When NEF brought up Aaron’s name, I knew that was the fight to make. I’m hoping to see the best version of Hughes. He’s a great guy, and I’ve got a lot of respect for him, but I’m going to break this kid on fight night.”

📰NEWS--📰 GRIMARD AND VASTA SET TO BLOW THE ROOF OFF AURA THIS SATURDAY AT NEF 46

[NEF PRESS RELEASE]

Portland, Maine (February 10, 2022) – New England Fights (NEF) returns with its next mixed-martial-arts (MMA) event, “NEF 46: Decade of Dominance,” this Saturday, February 12, 2022, at Aura in Portland, Maine. The event will commemorate NEF’s ten-year anniversary. The leading regional promotion launched on February 11, 2012.

Nathaniel Grimard (0-0) and Anthony Vasta (0-0) are scheduled to meet in a double professional debut at “NEF 46.”  Recently, the two featherweights were guests on The Room Podcast with host Steve Domenico.

Grimard is coming off a successful amateur career that saw him put together a 4-1 record and capture the NEF Amateur Featherweight Title.  He dropped the featherweight strap in a unanimous decision loss to tough competitor Billy Wilson (7-1) last November at “NEF 45.”  Grimard trains at Nostos MMA in Somersworth, New Hampshire under the guidance of UFC veteran and former NEF Pro Lightweight Champion Devin Powell (10-5).

While Grimard would have liked to have exited the amateur ranks with a win, when the opportunity to turn pro presented itself, he took it.  He is confident that his team at Nostos has prepared him for this step in his fight career.

GRIMARD AND VASTA SET TO GO PRO AT NEF 46

[NEF PRESS RELEASE]

Portland, Maine (November 30, 2021) – New England Fights (NEF) returns with its next mixed-martial-arts (MMA) event, “NEF 46: Decade of Dominance,” on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at Aura in Portland, Maine. The event will commemorate NEF’s ten-year anniversary. The leading regional promotion launched on February 11, 2012. Earlier today, NEF announced the addition of a professional featherweight bout to the fight card. Former NEF Amateur Featherweight Champion Nathaniel Grimard (0-0) is scheduled to take on Anthony Vasta (0-0) at a fight weight of 145-pounds.

Nathaniel Grimard made his NEF MMA debut in September 2019 at “NEF 40: School of Hard Knocks.” That night, Grimard submitted Justin Kangas (0-3) via armbar in the first round. During the pandemic lockdown, Grimard competed twice in Florida and improved his record to 3-0. His unbeaten record positioned Grimard to challenge for the then vacant NEF Featherweight Championship. In August, Grimard stopped Brandon Maillet-Fevens (3-2) in the second round at “NEF 44: Back in Black” to become the 145-pound titleholder. Grimard got right back in the cage at “NEF 45: Uprising” to defend his strap against Billy Wilson (7-1) from the famed Jackson Wink MMA camp in New Mexico. Grimard lost a laborious five-round decision that made Wilson the new champion. Now, Grimard hits the reset switch as he plans to turn professional against NEF newcomer, Anthony Vasta. Grimard represents Nostos MMA of Somersworth, New Hampshire where he trains under UFC and Bellator veteran, and former NEF Professional Lightweight Champion, Devin Powell (10-5).
