Portland, Maine (June 29, 2023) – New England Fights returns to Merrill Auditorium in Portland with its next mixed-martial-arts (MMA) event, “NEF 53: American Valor,” on Saturday, July 8, 2023. Earlier today, the fight promotion announced the addition of a professional lightweight bout to the card. Matt “Ken Doll” Denning (8-18) will meet Artur Minev (0-0) at a fight weight of 155 pounds.
Matt Denning is a longtime veteran of the NEF cage with a career dating back to 2013. Seven of his eight wins as a professional have come with the promotion. Denning’s most recent appearance with NEF took place last November when he vanquished rival Carl Langston (2-9) by submission in the first round of a long-awaited grudge match. He represents Denning’s MMA.
“I use to have a fire burning inside me to fight,” said Denning. “I lost that for some time. I’ve got that fire back now. I want more than just a fight, I wanna show how skilled I am, how blessed I am to be able to compete still with all the hardships that interfere with people living their dreams. I’m ready for a war.”
The fight will feature the pro debut for Artur Minev. He is the reigning NEF Amateur Lightweight Champion, having impressively defeated Zach Faulkner by first-round submission last month at “NEF 52” to claim the title. Minev is a perfect 3-0 as an amateur since his debut last December. A native of Ukraine, Minev currently represents Defensive Edge Martial Arts based in Wakefield, Massachusetts.
“This is my first step in professional MMA and I'm ready,” declared Minev. “I train hard every day. I have a goal and I'm going to it. I am motivated and determined to win. Follow my fights!”
“NEF 53: American Valor” takes place on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, Maine. Doors are scheduled to open at 6 pm with first fight taking place at 7 pm. Tickets to “NEF 53” are available now at www.porttix.com.

The adrenaline-fueled, supervised violence that makes it a worldwide phenomenon notwithstanding, mixed martial arts is paradoxically most often a gentlemen’s or ladies’ sport.
Talking smack before the event and bloodying the opposition during the fight are strictly business, as evidenced by how quickly the combatants embrace and make plans to sit down together with a cold beverage afterward.
There’s no such love or even mutual respect waiting to blossom while New England Fights (NEF) veterans Matthew Denning (7-16) and Carl Langston (2-6) are in the cage together Saturday. November 12 at Aura in Portland, Maine.
When months if not years of attempts to pair the journeymen come to fruition with a professional featherweight bout at NEF 50, it will light the fuse underneath two resilient dudes who flat-out don’t like each other.
“As a person, Carl Langston and I shouldn’t be in the same room together, ‘cause I’ll smack him in the mouth whether we’re getting paid to or not,” Denning said.

Portland, Maine (October 22, 2022) – New England Fights (NEF) returns to Aura in Portland, Maine on Saturday, November 12, 2022, with its next mixed-martial-arts (MMA) event “NEF 50.” Earlier today the fight promotion announced the addition of a professional featherweight bout to the card. Matt Denning (7-16) will take on Carl Langston (2-6) at a fight weight of 145 pounds.
The rivalry between Denning and Langston has been brewing for years. They were scheduled to meet each other as amateurs in 2014, but the fight was canceled. The pair has exchanged banter on social media for some time. A professional fight was never made, however, due to the disparity in weight between them. With Denning dropping back down to the featherweight division, the grudge match has finally become a reality.
Matt Denning has been one of the most active fighters in the New England region in 2022. “NEF 50” will mark Denning’s eighth fight this calendar year, including one pro boxing bout. He is on a two-fight losing streak this fall after putting together back-to-back wins last summer. Denning has vowed to end Langston’s career on November 12.

Bangor, Maine (August 31, 2022) – New England Fights (“NEF”) returns to Bangor, Maine on Friday, September 9, 2022, with its next mixed-martial-arts (“MMA”) event “NEF 49: Queen City Showdown.” It will be NEF’s first event in Bangor in more than three years. Earlier today, the fight promotion announced the addition of a professional lightweight bout to the card. Matt “Ken Doll” Denning (7-14) is scheduled to face Jordan “The Jackal” Downey (8-9-1) at a fight weight of 155 pounds. Matt Denning will look to win three fights in a row for the first time since 2015 when he finished his amateur career with two straight wins and then won his first two as a pro. It took Denning a mere 35 seconds to submit Brian Cosco (0-1) last month at “NEF 48” in Portland. Just weeks earlier, he had also submitted Jacob Guerrero (0-1) in the first round on a fight card in Massachusetts. The fight with Downey will also see Denning return to the lightweight division for the first time since 2018. “It’s the first time in a long time I can pull off a hat trick,” noted Denning. “Two wins in a row inside the NEF cage shows I’m still a threat in New England. I plan on making a statement. I’m coming back to 155 to eventually hit 145 again and see what I can do about changing the opinions people have about me in the MMA world! Thanks for the love and support!” Longtime MMA veteran Jordan Downey will make his NEF debut in Bangor. Downey has competed in the sport since 2012, primarily throughout the Midwest. He will look to rebound from back-to-back losses earlier this year. Downey has never lost three in a row over the course of his lengthy career. Portland, Maine (June 27, 2022) – New England Fights (NEF) returns with its next mixed-martial-arts (MMA) event “NEF 48: Heatwave” on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at the Rink at Thompson’s Point in Portland, Maine. The event will be NEF’s first outdoor event since “NEF 8” in 2013. Earlier today, the fight promotion announced the addition of a professional catchweight bout to the card. Matt “Ken Doll” Denning (6-14) is scheduled to face Brian Cosco (0-0) at a weight of 165 pounds.
The fight will be the fifth for Denning in just over two months – the most active period of his professional career. Denning lost to Jesse Erickson in the main event of “NEF 47” last month in Auburn, Maine. Over the course of the following three weeks, he would go on to take last-minute fights on an MMA card and a boxing event in Massachusetts and Maine, respectively. On June 17, Denning took yet another fight on an MMA card in Massachusetts and needed less than a minute to submit his opponent via guillotine choke. Now, in the fight with Cosco, he will look for the first back-to-back wins of his pro career since 2017.

Portland, Maine (October 20, 2021) – New England Fights (NEF) returns with its next mixed-martial-arts (MMA) event, “NEF 45: Uprising,” on Friday, November 5, 2021, at Aura in Portland, Maine. NEF has announced that Matt “Ken Doll” Denning (5-10) will meet Jon Deupree (0-0) in a professional welterweight contest.
Matt Denning is a longtime veteran of the NEF cage, having debuted with the promotion as an amateur in the spring of 2013. He will be looking for his first win in Maine since “NEF 29” when he submitted Dom Jones in the first round. Denning has competed in the past for global MMA promotions Bellator and World Series of Fighting. Since his last fight for NEF in 2018, Denning has begun training fighters at his own gym – Denning’s MMA.
“I’m excited to be back to my roots with NEF,” said Denning. “When I retired in 2018, I thought I would never be back. Now, sober, with an amazing family, career and support group, I’m ready to return. People have said that this is too much of a fighter for me and that Jon’s the best in New England. Well, where has he been? Why didn’t he go pro? I’ve been actively fighting since 2014 as a loser-drunk who didn’t have anything to show for his life. I used this sport to get me through the hardest time of my life and for a guy with a losing record, I won every time I fought. I’ve gained experience and valuable heart. Those are two things I don’t think my opponent has and it’s what I’m hoping to use to get me back in the win column. And what’s the worst thing that happens? I lose to ‘the best fighter in New England.’ Thanks again, NEF. I’m excited to be back!”
